Worship and Service

“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.” Psalm 63:3

Today is the Lord’s day, and I trust that you have been preparing your heart to worship Him today — not just because of WHAT He has done in your life, but because of WHO He is!

Are you satisfied with Him today? Just HIM? Is He enough for you and me? This quote from John Piper really gripped my heart this week:

What satisfies are not the gifts of God, but the glory of God – the glory of His love, the glory of His power, the glory of His wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. We do not honor the refreshing, self-replenishing, pure water of a mountain spring by lugging buckets of water up the path to make our contributions from the ponds below. We honor the spring by feeling thirsty, getting down on our knees, and drinking with joy. Then we say, “Ahhhhhh!” (that’s worship), and we go on our journey in the strength of the fountain (that’s service!). The mountain spring is glorified most when we are most satisfied with its water.

To be satisfied in God is the essence of what it means to love God. Loving God may include obeying all His commands; it may include believing all His Word; it may include thanking Him for all His gifts; but the essence of loving God is enjoying all He is. It is this enjoyment of God that glorifies His worth most fully, especially when all around our soul gives way. — John Piper

The hymn write expressed it this way:

What Are You Afraid Of?

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present or the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

It seems lately that there are more and more people struggling with fear and anxiety. Many Christians are struggling right now with crippling fears — fears that are overwhelming. And so many people who are struggling have said, “I am afraid that God no longer loves me because I ___________________.

Well if you are struggling today with the love of God, these words are for YOU. They were written by Brennan Manning in a powerful devotional book, HOW GREAT THOU ART (Multnomah):

The question which the gospel of grace puts to us is simply this: Who shall separate you from the love of Christ? What are YOU afraid of?

Are you afraid that your weakness could separate you from the love of Christ? IT CAN’T!

Are you afraid that you inadequacies could separate you from the love of Christ? THEY CAN’T!

Are you afraid that your inner poverty could separate you from the love of Christ? IT CAN’T.

Difficult marriage, loneliness, anxiety over the children’s future? THEY CAN’T.

Negative self image? IT CAN’T!

Economic hardship, racial hatred, street crime, terrorism? THEY CAN’T.

Rejection by loved ones or the suffering of loved ones? THEY CAN’T.

Persecution by authorities, going to jail? THEY CAN’T.

Nuclear war? IT CAN’T!

The gospel of grace calls out: NOTHING CAN EVER SEPARATE YOU FROM THE LOVE OF GOD MADE VISIBLE IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.

You must be convinced of this, trust it, and never forget to remember. Everything else will pass away, but the love of Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Faith will become vision, hope will become possession, but the love of Jesus Christ that is stronger than death endures forever! In the end, it is the one thing you can hang onto!

NEVER AGAIN REMEMBERED

“I will not remember your sins.” Isaiah 43:25

I get accused of having the memory of an elephant — I remember stuff that people have long forgotten. I can recall funny stories or things that people have done, and years later when I see them, I will remind them of an event or funny thing in their life. They will often remark –“He never forgets.”

While most of us are terrified at becoming forgetful … Let me remind you that God is a forgetter! We tend to remember what we should forget and forget what we should remember.

But when it comes to our sin, because of what Jesus did in paying for our sins with HIS blood, those sins are forgiven and HE REMEMBERS THEM NO MORE!

Listen to Bible teacher Jerry Bridges: Not only has God blotted out our sins, He has further promised never to remember our sins, never to bring them to His mind again.

What an overwhelming thought! What joy this should bring to our hearts. Think of one of your more recent sins, of which you’re now ashamed. It may have been an unkind word, a resentful attitude, or a lustful thought. Whatever it might be, God says He has put it out of His mind. HE REMEMBERS IT NO MORE!

To remember no more is God’s way of expressing absolute forgiveness. In Hebrews 8:12, God said, “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more! (NIV) And again in Hebrews 10:17-18, He said, “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.’ and where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.” (NIV) Note that in both passages “remembering no more” is equated with forgiveness.
Psalm 130:3-4 states that the same truth in a somewhat different way: “If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with You is forgiveness, that you may be feared.” Here the Psalmist considered the prospect that God does remember our sins, that He does keep a record of them. If it were true, it would be a terrifying thought. The psalmist said, “Who could stand?” Its a rhetorical question. None of us could successfully stand before God’s bar of judgment. But then the psalmist went on to exclaim, “But with You there is forgiveness!”

God does not keep a record of our sins. Instead He forgives. This, of course, anticipates the sacrifice of Christ for our sins, for “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22) — from HOLINESS DAY BY DAY — Transformation Thoughts for Your Spiritual Journey (Navpress)

Some of us end up getting stuck in our Christian walk because we hold onto the sins that are buried, paid for, and remembered no more! Is that true in your life today, my brother? The Exchanged Life

“I am crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

I shared this in a Freedom Fighter back in 2005. It is worth repeating as it is the heart beat of our Keswick message. The devotional was written by Dr. Henry Blackaby in his book, EXPERIENCING GOD — THE DEVOTIONAL (Broadman/Holman).

The Christian life is an exchanged life: Jesus’ life for your life!

When Christ takes control, your life takes on dimensions you would have never known apart from Him. When you are weak, Christ demonstrates His strength in your life (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

When you face situations that are beyond your comprehension, you have only to ask, and the infinite wisdom of God is available to you (James 1:5).

When you are faced with humanly impossible situations, God does the impossible (Luke 18:27).

When you encounter people whom you find difficult to love, God expresses His unconditional love through you (1 John 4:7).

When you are at a loss as to what to pray for someone, the Spirit will guide you in your prayer life (Romans 8:16).

When Christ takes up residence in the life of a believer, “all the fullness of God” is available to that person (Ephesians 3:19).

It is marvelously freeing to know that God controls your life and knows what it can become. Rather than constantly worrying about what you will face, your great challenge is to continually release every area of your life to God’s control. The temptation will be to try to do by yourself what only God can do. Our assignment is to “abide in the vine” and to allow God to do in and through us only what HE can do (John 15:5). Only God can be God. Allow Him to live out His divine life THROUGH you. He is the only ONE who can.

Praying From a Close Relationship

“And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.” 1 John 3:22

Sometimes we think prayer is like using our “genie in a bottle.” We forget that are are some perquisites for answers to prayer like two that are mentioned in the verse about.

Dr. Glynn Evans in his daily devotional, DAILY WITH HE KING (Moody Press) shares some insight about praying from a close relationship:

I will renew with God my covenant of prayer. Theoretically, I have always believed in prayer. Practically, my life has been strewn with pleas that were never answered.

How can I square such failure with the clear teaching of Jesus? “Ask, and it shall be given” (Matthew 7:7), “whatever you ask in My name, that will I do” (John 14:13).

Jesus encourages me to ask anything, to ask repeatedly and unashamedly, and to keep on asking until the answer comes.

But haven’t we been taught to pray “If it be Thy will?” Shouldn’t we defer to God’s sovereign control of things and try to get on the inside track with Him before asking?

However, there are conditions to answered prayer:

1. I cannot “regard iniquity in my heart” (Psalm 66:18), that is, give iniquity place, time, and attention.

2. I cannot “ask amiss,” that is to further my lustful desires (James 4:3).

3. I cannot be “wavering” (James 1:6), that is, wanting something so little that it really makes no difference whether I get it or not.

4. I must “abide” in Christ (John 15:7). To abide in Him means to be drawn toward Him as a flower is drawn toward the sun.

Now I begin to see what answered prayer really means: a life of total dedication to God, a life lived in Him that is so real that I can discern His desires, His mind, His will. If I pray from the midst of that intimate relationship, my prayers will never fail. When I reach that point I will never need to ask, “If it be Thy will.” The Christian who keeps asking God for the benefit of His will does not know Him in a deep, abiding way. The Christian who is constantly a delight to God will be one to whom God will reveal His mind.

Nothing Is Impossible for God

Nothing Is Impossible for God

“Nothing is impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

Please make sure you read to the end today. I shared this reading from STREAMS IN THE DESERT (Zondervan) back in 2006. It is one that is really worth repeating:

IT IS POSSIBLE for believers who are completely willing to trust the power of the Lord for their safe keeping and victory to lead a life of readily taking HIS promises exactly as they are and finding them to be true.

IT IS POSSIBLE to daily “cast all your anxiety on him” (1 Peter 5:7) and experience deep peace in process.

IT IS POSSIBLE to have our thoughts and the desires of our hearts purified in the deepest sense of the word.

IT IS POSSIBLE to see God’s will in every circumstance and to accept it with singing instead of complaining.

IT IS POSSIBLE to become strong through and through by completely taking refuge in the power of God and by realizing that our greatest weakness and the things that upset our determination to be patient, pure, or humble provide an opportunity to make sin powerless over us. This opportunity comes through Him who loves us and works to bring us into agreement with His will, and thereby supplies a blessed sense of His presence and His power.

All there are DIVINE POSSIBILITIES. Because they are HIS work, actually experiencing them will always humble us, causing us to bow at His feet an teaching us to hunger and thirst for more.

We will never be satisfied with anything less – each day, each hour, each moment in Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit — than walking with God.

We are able to have as much of God as we want. Christ puts the key to HIS treasure chest in our hands and invites us to take all we desire. If someone is allowed into a bank vault, told to help himself to the money, and leaves without one cent, whose fault is it if he remains poor? And whose fault is it that Christians usually have such meager portions of the free riches of God?

On Friday, I learned another example of the fact that NOTHING is impossible for God. We have been pleading with the Lord for a Kubota. Ours bit the dust, and we are so crippled without it. It seemed like the need would never be met — but God showed up on Friday and met the need in an amazing way. We rejoice is HIS provision at JUST THE RIGHT TIME. The Grandest Fact

THE GRANDEST FACT

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in Him.” 1 John 4:16

I love my grand kids (and my kids …) and I tell them often how much I love them. I will often ask them, “How much does Pop love you?” to which they are all starting to reply, “A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck!”

Sometimes we need to step back as men and be reminded that God love us! Today’s devotional penned by Oswald Chambers is a great encouragement. May there is some brother today who needs to hear this message:

Look back over you own history as revealed to you by grace, and you will see one central fact growing large: God is love. No matter how often your faith in such an announcement was clouded, no matter how the pain and suffering of the moment made you speak in a wrong mood, still this statement has borne its own evidence along with it most persistently. GOD IS LOVE.

In the future, when trials and difficulties await you, do not be fearful. Let not this faith slip from you; GOD IS LOVE. Whisper it not only to your heart in its hour of darkness, but here in the corner of God’s earth. Live in the belief of it; preach it by your sweetened, chastened, happy life; sing it in consecrated moments of peaceful joy, sing until the world around you “is wrought to sympathy with hopes and fears it heeded not.”

The world does not invite you to sing, but God does. Song is the sign of an unburdened heart; so sing your songs of love uninvited, rising even higher and higher into a fuller concept of the greatest, grandest fact on the stage of life: GOD IS LOVE!

But words and emotions pass, precious as their influence may be for the time. So when the duller moments come and the mind needs something more certain and sure to consider than the memory of mere emotions and stirring sentiments, consider this revelation: the eternal fact that God is love — not, God is loving.

We must keep ourselves in the love of God be meditating on this fact; then we shall not despair for long. The love of God performs a miracle of grace in graceless human hearts. GOD IS LOVE. One brief sentence; it is the gospel. (from HOW GREAT THOU ART — Multnomah)

A PLEDGE OF TRUST

“Trust in the Lord and do good, so shall thou dwell in the land … and be fed.” Psalm 37:3

Good morning on this beautiful Lord’s Day. Jan and I will be driving to Lancaster this morning where I will be sharing the Word with the wonderful people from New Song Fellowship Church. Pastor Jamie Mitchell and the folks from New Song have been a great encouragement to me and the ministry of America’s KESWICK.

I have been reading through a hymnal as a part of my devotional time, and today there is a wonderful prayer written by Bryan Jeffery Leach entitled, A PLEDGE OF TRUST. I thought it was appropriate for this Lord’s Day as we gather together to worship our AUDIENCE OF ONE:

Father, during this coming week there may be times when I shall not be able to sense Your presence or to be aware of Your nearness.

When I am lonely and by myself
I TRUST YOU TO BE MY COMPANION.
When I am tempted to sin
I TRUST YOU TO KEEP ME FROM IT.

When I am depressed and anxious
I TRUST YOU TO LIFT MY SPIRITS.

When I am crushed by my responsibility and overwhelmed by the demands of people on my time,
I TRUST YOU TO GIVE ME POISE AND A SENSE OF PURPOSE.

When I am rushed and running
I TRUST YOU TO MAKE ME STILL INSIDE.

When I forget You
I TRUST THAT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET ME.

When I forget others
I TRUST YOU TO PROMPT ME TO THINK OF THEM.

The Warrior’s Prayer

THE WARRIOR’S PRAYER

“Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and His vast strength. Put on the FULL armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-11 (CSB)

How often to I find myself going out to do battle forgetting to put on the armor that God has given me to fight the battles of life. Can you imagine how dumb it would be to go into battle in an war without being properly equipped and outfitted?

Paul in Ephesians 6 tells us about the “Full Armor of God”. I love this prayer written by Dr. David Jeremiah. It’s called the “Warrior’s Prayer”

Heavenly Father,
Your warrior prepares for battle
Today I claim the victory over Satan by putting on the whole armor of God!

I put on the GIRDLE of TRUTH!
May I stand firm in the truth of YOUR WORD so that I will not be a victim of Satan’s lies.

I put on the BREASTPLATE of RIGHTEOUSNESS!
May it guard my heart from evil so I will remain pure and holy, protected under the blood of Jesus Christ.

I put on the SHOES of PEACE!
May I stand firm in the Good News of the Gospel so Your peace will shine through me and be a light to all I encounter.

I take the SHIELD of FAITH!
May I be ready for Satan’s fiery darts of doubt, denial, and deceit so I will not be vulnerable to spiritual defeat.

I put on the HELMET of SALVATION!
May I keep my mind focused on YOU so that Satan will not have a stronghold on my thoughts.

I take the SWORD of the SPIRIT!

May the two-edged sword of YOUR WORD be ready in my hands so I can expose the tempting words of Satan.

By faith your warrior has put on the WHOLE armor of God! I am prepared to live this day in spiritual victory! Amen

COUNT YOURSELF

“Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” Romans 6:11

One of the messages that I heard the late Pastor Bill Raws share with the men of the Colony of Mercy was from this very text. As a part of the message he would graphically describe to the men that a casket is sitting in the front of the chapel and inside it is a dead body. All the life has been drained from it, and it is dead.

He likened us to that dead body according to Romans 6:11. Count on it — we are dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. The coffin has been nailed shut.

However, the problem is that we don’t want to be dead. Even after the funeral we try to pull ourselves out of the coffin and live the old defeated life.

Listen to what Bible teacher, Chris Tiegreen, from Walk Thru the Bible, has to say about this exchanged life:

Many Christians miss out on experiencing the victorious, joy-filled life, not because they aren’t in face crucified and raised in Jesus, but because they don’t know it. Perhaps it is only a theological belief or a matter of creed. Perhaps it is misunderstood as something to strive for rather than to accept. Perhaps it is seen as a future possibility rather than an established position.

None of that is enough. A Christian will really experience the joy and power and victory of the Christian life when he or she believes its foundation: We were crucified with Jesus, and now we are raised in the HIS life. And it must be more than belief; we must KNOW IT, COUNT ON IT, CLING TO IT as a rock-solid event as certain as the day we graduated, got married, or signed a contract.

Too many Christians are TRYING to make the Christian experience true for them. They have put the cart before the horse. EXPERIENCE DOESN’T LEAD TO TRUTH, TRUTH LEADS TO EXPERIENCE. Instead of praying FOR the resurrected life, ACCEPT IT and LIVE IT. Instead of hoping you will die to sin, COUNT OF THE FACT THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE!

Our struggles are often a product of how we see ourselves. If we see ourselves as sinners TRYING to be BETTER Christians, that is how we will live. If we see ourselves as sinners who were BURIED WITH CHRIST and RAISED TO NEW LIFE, that too is how we’ll live. Romans 6:11 tells us what to see.
