SELF-EXALTATION: THE SECOND PART

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 8.39.44 PMBut Peter replied, “May your money be destroyed with you for thinking God’s gift can be bought! You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God. Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive your evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.” ~Acts 8:20-23 (NLT)

There are so many dangers to consider when you feel inspired enough to spread the Gospel. There are some who think themselves not scholarly enough to share the Good News but they have to do it outta obedience to Christ. The injustice here is that your own doubt may come out in your testimony and therefore can make you unbelievable. Then we got those whose zeal is off the scale and they share so much that their listeners only see a height that can’t be reached. Then we got those who sauce it down just enough to make profitable even to the point of blurring truth with self-help, “Just buy my book and attend my conference and I’ll show you how this works.”  To quote a polite British phrase…POPPYCOCK!!

The last time I was with you I was sharing some things about a guy named Simon. We can read about him in the 8th chapter of Acts. He starts off a “wizard” but encounters Philip and becomes a follower of…Philip. Oh he does hear the Gospel Good News of Jesus Christ but his focus turns from the Cross to the apostles and what they are doing. When I got to the part in Scripture where Simon offers to pay for the gift of the Holy Spirit I was like “What is this dude thinking?” Now to be honest I use to look at this as a poor soul who thought grace could be bought with worldly things but a recent digging into this reveal something different to me and that is the sin of Self-Exaltation.

With a little help from my boy, Matt Henry, we can see just how crazy this all gets. To start with when he saw the act of laying hands Simon musta said to himself, “This is a new magic I am missing out on and I want it” and it went on to expose what he thought of himself…being on an equal plane with the apostles. Simon didn’t even think to ask to have hands laid upon him and as Matt wrote, “He was ambitious to have the honor of an apostle, but not at all solicitous to have the spirit and disposition of a Christian. He was more desirous to gain honor to himself than to do good to others.” (and the choir sang, “How great I art, how great I art”)

The next few things are like insults to the missionary work that was being done by the apostles. Simon treated Philip, John and Peter as if they were “mercenaries” that did miracles for money (as much as we don’t see it in Scripture) and “The Way” gave validity to the so-called “magic” that Simon had practiced. Matt gives this observation, “He showed that, like Balaam, he aimed at the rewards of divination; for he would not have offered money for this power if he had not hoped to get money by it.” Matt and I both agree on this, he showed that he had a very high conceit of himself and that he had never his heart truly humbled.

Like I was saying in my previous Freedom Fighter I need to be careful that I don’t think more highly of myself than I ought. I praise God that I received the privileged gift that has me striving to rightly divide His word but with the snap of His fingers it can be taken away just as fast and I can be feeding the pigs, wanting to eat their slop because I sang along with the choir, “How Great I Art”.

It is my hope that you already know this and that I have just preached this to THE CHOIR but for those that miss this lesson in Scripture (or worse, have chosen to ignore it) may the words of Peter penetrate your heart, repent and pray that this be taken from you. Self-Exaltation will make you a slave of you and should not be viewed as a by-product of the cost of discipleship. It should be viewed as the cost of disobedience and a continued separation from a God who very much wants you to stay in the flock. Amen?

A Good Book

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 3.51.37 PM“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” ~2 Corinthians 4:7

Have you ever heard the expression “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? I’m not much of a reader but I’m guessing as one who is and is looking for a book to read that what they see on the cover may not dictate what’s inside.

The same is true of us as believers in Jesus Christ, we may be earthen vessels but inside is where the treasure is. In the previous chapter Paul tells us that we are an epistle or letter to the world that tells a redemptive power that comes from God. This is a life that is controlled by the Holy Spirit, where our words are few by our actions speak volumes…

Paul goes on to say that when we are living our lives as a testimony of the grace of God the circumstances of life that come our way no longer affect us because of the trust we have that God is in control. As we are “hard pressed” the world looks at our cover and thinks “there’s no way that old book can handle that problem”. Then we come out on the other side not crushed. We can be perplexed and they watch to see if we go into despair but the pages of this book reveal perseverance.

I think the key to being able to live this way is to allow the Holy Spirit of God to have His way in our life. The confusion by some believers is that they think because we have the Holy Spirit in us, it’s the same as the Holy Spirit having us (you may have to read that again). To invite the Spirit into our hearts and never allowing Him to have control is like a book with a dynamic cover that on the outside proclaims a new life but on the inside it’s the same old story.

It’s not until I’m convinced that God is who He says He is, Jesus has come and defeated death and has made a way for me to have fellowship with the Father and the Holy Spirit is able to empower me to live victorious. The vehicle that gets us there is Faith which leads to surrender.

You see, this old book might not look like much and there may be some cracks in this earthen vessel but thru those cracks shines a Light that tells a wonderful story of redemption. So if you are looking for a good book, look to the Good Book and allow His-story to be your story. Verse 16 says “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day”. Amen

War Room Experience!

Screen Shot 2016-01-04 at 3.39.20 PM“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”~2 Corinthians 10:4

After watching War Room, I was reminded of how our spiritual battles are parallel to military combat. Many individuals are planning and investing their lives in the name of freedom. This battle is not won by accident; to win a war it takes more than a casual approach to the battle. It takes strategy to triumph these battles.

We are in a battle and our enemy is out to destroy our families, our faith, and our walks with the Lord. The elderly women’s war room was a fascinating example of what a prayer closet should be like. It was her foundational battle plan to engage in the real fight. Matthew states, “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.” (Matthew 6:5) She valued the art of prayer and mentioned to her mentee that if she wanted different, she would have to approach the circumstance differently.

Personally, this is where my focus is as we end of 2015 and the begin 2016. Not a New Year’s resolution, but a conscious, bold approach to life with a fresh perceptive. We need more Jesus; not more church, not more Bible studies, or doing more. Simply more of Christlikeness, more love, and less selfishness. This war begins in prayer. Do you have a War Room?

Happy New Year!!!

Happy new year composition

The Daily Bible Reading: Psalm 1; Proverbs 1

Think about this: “The Christian says, ‘Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or to be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage. I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country, which I shall not find till after death; I must never let it get snowed under or turned aside; I must make it the main object of life to press on to that country and to help others to do the same.”  ~C.S. Lewis

My Relationship

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 8.50.26 PMI’ve been walking through this life seeking a better understanding of my relationship with Jesus. Every relationship requires something, but this one less than all others. Relationships with people are hinged upon things such as honesty, dependability, what you have, what you can do, even appearance and manners. If you’re always taking without being able to offer something into a relationship than that relationship doesn’t grow. In fact often with most people of the world a relationship like that will disappear. This comes naturally because we are selfish and in order to recognize this we need to have it shown to us.

This concept has been adopted by most of society, we are taught to share, and be nice to others early in school, at home if you have siblings often told these same things. But as we get older and objects become more personal and valuable we lose the sharing concept and lean towards good manners, and rightly so, if someone is rude to me why should I be nice to them or let them use my things and break them.

More than likely if someone mistreats me they will do the same to my things, if they don’t respect me or my things why would I want to be around them. Soon we start treating people the same way they treat us or worse. We start treating people like that from the beginning as a way to protect ourselves.

Now this idea is why I have a need to better understand my relationship with Jesus. See the way of the world has taught me to protect myself by turning my heart of flesh to stone. To only be concerned with me and mine, even to a point of deception, by saying things like, I’m not selfish, look what I do for my family. This whole new selfish concept begins so gradually and it’s all around us that we just fall into the same pattern, we don’t notice it happening.

When I really and truly heard the Gospel my eyes began to open, I noticed the anger, hate, and selfishness that controlled me. I heard and saw many other people around me the same way and thought how gross, how ugly, I don’t want to be like this, there has to be a better way. I remembered my mom always saying do to others as you want people to do to you. Then this voice inside me, which was the sinful man said, yeah why don’t people do that, if they did then I would, but since they don’t then I won’t. Finally came a point in time when I needed to know how I could find joy and peace, see when you’re always protecting yourself, when you don’t trust anyone, when anger and hate control you, peace and joy allude you. I see people with these things so how do I get them.

First I tried making sure I didn’t need anyone, you know be completely self-efficient which only worked for a period of time. This became very tiring and exhausting to the point of needing help. So in order to maintain this idea of self-efficiency I turn to man made things. Things like pills, alcohol and anything that pleased me and at any cost and that cost was everything.

There are two real important facts to see at this point, one is I only thought that I was being self-efficient, and two what my mom shared with me about “doing to others”. Those things I was using to defeat the exhaustion became ideals and dominating sin, and mom’s message was actually God’s word. I want to share some of God’s word with you now and hope to see and hear that you also see the need and seek for it, so you can have joy and peace that comes with a better relationship with Jesus.

The first verse I want to share to help explain why I think my life has gone in this direction is Isaiah 55:11 “So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”

Notice a couple of things here, so God sent his word to me through my mom. It will not return empty and it will accomplish what God wants it to. So make sure you share God’s word with everyone you can so that each person you know can have the opportunity that you now have.

The next verse I want to share is Luke 6:31 “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” This can also be found in Matthew 7:12 and is the verse that God gave to me as a child through my mother. Now I’m not a child anymore and many years have gone by, but in Isaiah 55:11 it doesn’t give a length of time on how long it takes for God’s word to accomplish His desire just that it will.

The next verses I feel led to share is Matthew 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

If you remember at the beginning of this paper I mention all relationships required something and that the one with Jesus required less than any. I also talked about being self-efficient so that I could have peace and joy, and that didn’t really work out too well.

In these verses we read that Jesus does require some things first is “come to me” meaning trust and believe that He is God (FAITH). Second He mentions a knowing of us being “weary and burdened” and that if we allow Him to teach us He “will give you rest” and in the last verse in Matthew 11 He says it’s easy. So you see this relationship requires less, it’s for those who are tiered of struggling on their own, or found that what they have tried doesn’t work. And He does give us joy and peace otherwise known as “rest”.

SELF-EXALTATION: THE FIRST PART

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 8.39.44 PM“When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!” ~Acts 8:18-19 (NLT)

“Ah…this can’t be for me. Welte musta made a mistake” so I replied to his e-mail anyway. I had been outta The Colony for about 4 years; I had hit a plateau in my walk and was waiting for God to do the next big thing. I shared this Bill Welte as I was making sure he had the right guy for the task that he was asking me to be part of. His reply was classic B.W. “Praise the Lord…now get to work” and in January of 2008 I submitted my first of what would be many Freedom Fighters.

Every time I would submit one (via e-mail) I would write in the body of my letter “Bill, I hope you can use this Freedom Fighter.” As time passed Bill kinda nudged me about my opening line and assured that he trusted my writing but my reply was “But Bill I’m handling the Word of God and I don’t think I should take that lightly.” But here we are 8 years later and by God’s grace I’m still at it. Through it all I have been privileged to examine God’s Word as a good Berean should and I am no closer to understanding our God than I was when I first started…even with all the head knowledge I’ve attained.

I should publish all the Freedom Fighters I’ve written since then but the Gospel was a free gift for me to receive and what will it profit me to gain a few dollars just to see my name in print? Anyway, the point to this is how careful I need to be on thinking myself higher than I ought to. We’re living in time where self-promotion is at an all-time high and in the world of Christianity it’s just as bad. I don’t care what Christian channel you tune in on someone out there is selling what they think is truth…even if it doesn’t align with Scripture.

When the early church was setting itself up it was important to the apostles that what Jesus shared with them maintained its status as truth; boundaries had to made and enforced. When it came to a man named Simon enough was enough. In The Book of Acts, 8th chapter, we encounter Simon. This dude was all kinds of wrong. From a Jewish stand point he’s from Samaria (so that’s bad), practices sorcery (violator of O.T. standards) in front of a live audience and could be basking in the glory of being called someone who is “the Great Power of God”.  (Uh-Oh…now that’s a no-no for certain)

But something happens when Philip shows up. Scripture doesn’t credit any miracles to Philip at this moment just that he preaches the Gospel Good News to the people of Samaria. The people believe and are being baptized through the effective preaching of the apostle Philip and Simon is in the crowd, somewhere, realizing that he has it all wrong. So he made his decision to do likewise and he begins to hang out with Philip. Then came the signs, then came the miracles that are attributed to Philip and Simon watched in amazement.

As the story goes on we see that John and Peter come in from Jerusalem. They begin to lay hands on the new believers so that they may receive the Holy Spirit. Now as I look at this happening in Scripture I don’t see that a love offering was taken up first, nor do I see it written “Receive the Holy Spirit for only 5 denari” (maybe if this was Inspiration Channel…oops, shouldn’t have let that slip out, sorry), as a matter of fact, all I see is men being used by God to impart to those believers something that they were missing and it was a free gift…so why would a former “sorcerer” think that this would have a material cost?

I would like to say that he was an idiot but that isn’t very Christ-like (I am thinking it so I guess that’s just as bad). However, the next time I am with you I would like to examine Simon through the words of my boy Matt Henry.  He has an interesting spin on the matter that I concur with. But until then ponder on this if you will…Is God’s grace for sell? And if it is do you have what it takes to pay for it? From my viewpoint the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ was the price to pay for it. If you want God’s grace you’ll have to make the exchange from what is your life now to what needs to be done to live for Jesus. Simply put…surrender and exchange. Amen?

His Love Endures!

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 5.22.49 PMOh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! ~1 Chronicles 16:34

King David’s life was filled with many challenging situations. Here is no different. At this point of his journey he had recently defeated the Philistines and proceeded to build a place for the Ark of God. He had the ability to stretch his arm to praise God regardless of his circumstances. And I believe that part of his success was that he gained a healthy perception on God. Not just as a Savior, or the Creator, or the Rock, but all these attributes and more.

He thanks God, knowing that He is good. Lately I have notice that many testimonies attest that God is good, by some extraordinary event He accomplished. I experienced this in myself as I thank God for another great Christmas. While watching the guys in the Colony receive their Christmas gifts for their families and themselves, I was reminded; this was me ten years ago. It reminded me of the hope and it made me feel special after years of bondage and abnormal living.

However, is God not good regardless of the way my life is turning out? Or that I have a little extra Christmas gifts to give and receive. David mentions that he was thankful because God is good, and that His loves endures forever.

I can’t even comprehend everlasting, enduring love. Humanity has a limited ability to love and I’m thankful to God that His love isn’t conditional. His love is patient, His Love kind, His love is everlasting; the list goes on. This is the love that kept him on the cross. The love that pushes past humanity’s flaws and loves us anyway. Yes, when we are good and when we are bad; God love endures. This isn’t a license to sin, but a realty that should empowers us to live free from sin. His love endures forever, and I’m thankful. Have you ever truly embraced His everlasting love?

What’s Your One Word for 2016?

I trust you and your families had a blessed Christmas. It is a wonderful time of the year to celebrate the birth of our Savior.

For the past several years I have challenged our partners and you to prayerfully consider one word for the year that you can focus on as well as putting a verse with that word. The idea is not original with me. I learned this principle from author Jon Gordon who has written a classic book on this subject. I commend it to you.

Last year my word was HOPE and the verse the Lord gave me was our theme verse from Joshua 1:9. It was a timely word and I was amazed how often it appeared in messages, emails, blogs, and in my reading.

Tomorrowland 2016_LetterThis year our theme is TOMORROW LAND: FACING THE FUTURE WITH CONFIDENCE. Our theme verse is from Philippians 1:6 which is “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

As 2016 fast approaches all of us probably find ourselves a little unsettled if we are really honest. Just think about the world in which we are living. In 2014 the American people were polled and asked what their top fears were. Are you ready for this?

1. Walking alone at night

2. Being a victim of identity theft

3. Safety of the internet

4. Being the victim of a mass/random shooting

5. Public speaking

The same pollsters asked Americans this year what their fears were and here are the results:

44% fear terrorism right here in America 41% biological warfare 40% government corruption 38% economic collapse

Dr. Jack Carhart gave a description of fear years ago: False Evidence Appearing Real. Pastor John Hibbard reminds us that the opposite of fear is faith: Forsaking All I Trust Him.

As I was studying a message on fear and faith, the Lord gave me my word for 2016 = TRUST. That is biggest way that we can face the future with confidence – trusting in Him. I am planning to read through the Scriptures again this year and I am hoping you will join us. I have my highlighter read to see how many times the word TRUST will appear.

Will you join me in picking a word? If you, would you send me your word. I’d like to be praying for you that God will wow you with His glory and presence as He teaches you and me about the words He has for us. Happy New Year – and God bless you.

Facing the future with confidence,
