If They Came to Our Church (Part 2)

iStock-660195888 (1).jpg

“The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon, and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners. In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.” – Acts 10:9-13 (NLT)

I’m not too sure how many of us out there really have said, “reading the Book of Leviticus made me a better Christian.” After all, there are way too many directions for way too many sacrifices found in its pages and once you get to chapter 20, you have lots of punishment for those things that get violated. And when you get to chapter 23, the appointed festivals are listed and are to be observed. The “Feast of First-fruits” and “Feast of Weeks” had their place in Jewish living, but as I have said in the past, when Jesus Christ shows up on the scene, He will flip the script on everything Jewish. So much so that his own people were ready to give him a good old-fashioned stoning.

We can’t assume that a lot of this tradition had disappeared as the 1st century church was being established. In the Book of Acts, we can see that Jewish believers still went to the Temple for worship and maintained observing the annual holy days. The Samaritans got drawn back into things and it won’t be too much after that when Paul will do the Lords will into grafting the Gentiles into “The Way.” And once Peter gets over his issue with eating with uncircumcised men, he tells the other Jewish men about how, by the Glory of God bestowed unto those Gentiles, the church is on its way to growth. HOWEVER….Let’s get back to the 21st century and re-ask the question…What if the Apostles came to our church today?

I think one of the most unfortunate things they would see is the lack of reverence for the gathering of God’s people. They would see the last-minute people walking the aisles looking for seats just as service was beginning. They would see folks carrying frozen coffee drinks and a breakfast sandwich instead of a Bible (yes, I am gonna have to dismiss your Bible app) as they slid across the pew bench. They would see folks still in the foyer catching up with each other while the worship music is being played. James, Peter, and John would most likely be caught in the cross talk of moms making lunch plans for right after service. They would see men just sitting there looking as if being in God’s presence is a chore instead of a joy. Oooops, there went someone’s cell phone (wonder if it was Jesus calling?)

Way back in the 1st century, it seems as if the hunger to be in His presence was all that mattered. Now it seems as if we pencil it in as part of our “to-do” list. There is a huge call for people to get to the things of God, and I am not too sure the state of the American church is ready for it. In some of the churches that I’ve been in the past few months, I have seen some of what I wrote about in this Freedom Fighter actually happen…but not in every church. It seems just as YHVH saved a remnant of Israel to maintain the lineage of His Son is how He is maintaining a remnant of the Church that Jesus built some 2,000 years ago.

I don’t mean to be a “Debbie Downer” about this either, far from it. Rather, I wish to encourage you to get into the remnant. Be in that Church of (insert your hometown here), be united with El Elyon, The Most-High God and learn from The Master Himself, Jesus Christ. We can spend decades studying where the true church is at and yet still miss it because we spent too much time adding to it. We need to be radical about our church life so that it becomes contagious. We need to stop ourselves for a moment and take a look and see if what we are doing has an effect on the surroundings we live in; see if there is an impact and if it isn’t, we need to make adjustments. Because quite frankly, we can’t complain about the state of the world we live in if we can’t maintain the state of true worship we need to have in our churches. Amen?

Parable that follows a Burden?

iStock-537442618 (2).jpg

Another parable He spoke to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, Which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.” – Matthew 13:33

Does God give us burdens? Is there a burden that has drawn you to the heart of God that boarders on being considered judgmental or critical? Sometimes I think God allows us to see His heart for His church, and even if there is nothing you can do about it, there’s this connection with the Father that enhances our relationship and we can actually share in His grief. Of course this should also take place in our own lives as we should always be sensitive to the things that God disapproves of.

My burden? The fellowships of the Church.

Now the parable. I recently saw a picture of some friends spending time together with their extended families at a reunion. It brought a smile to my face as all were gathered together, big smiles, the making of life long memories and sharing of the past. But the last set of pictures caught my attention, it was a whole group of family members posing for a group picture, the setting was a boat dock over a lake. The first picture was everyone smiling and saying cheese, the next set of pictures was half the party in the lake because the dock collapsed. Fortunately no one was hurt, so after a gasp, I admit, I did chuckle and gave kudos to the photographer for snapping the after pictures. I perceived that the idea of taking a picture over the water sounded harmless, and even though some may have been skeptical the encouraging words of loved ones and family members were convincing enough to persuade them to join in. Maybe words like, “it’ll be fun”, “It’s different” and “everyone else is doing it, don’t be old fashioned.”

In my recent quiet time with the Lord, I believe He used that snapshot to confirm a burden I carry for the church. There are a lot of “new and different” fellowships springing up that are very disturbing to me, like a bunch of loved ones on an unstable dock. As I shared with some who are excited about this endeavor, I’m usually accused of being judgmental or critical. When the weight of disapproval from fellow believers gets heavy, God always has a way of speaking to me and lifting the burden and placing it back on Himself with a type of parable. At that point I feel a connection with God and am able to direct my prayers toward those who need the truth of the Gospel. I can also rest in the fact that as long as I share my convictions to those in authority and to anyone who asks my opinion, I’m no longer need to do anything but pray.

In Matthew 13:13, Jesus gives one of the most powerful parables that pertain to today. The NLT version says, Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.” If the word of God is the flour (bread) then the yeast (pride) that is added to seem to misrepresent the true meaning by adding it.

So, what is your burden, and has God given you a parable to comfort you? If so, share it with those affected and then commit it to prayer.

I realize this post is out of character for me and I would have preferred not to write it, but I did it out of obedience from the leading of the Holy Spirit, thanks for listening.

What’s Your Response to an Encounter with Christ?

iStock-509719722.jpg

“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Luke 1:41)

In my small time as Christian, I’ve noticed that believers have various perception of worship and it occasionally causes division. Some dress very formal and love traditional hymns, others Christians enjoy more comfortable settings and lean towards contemporary music, and there is a unique group that love both; I like to believe I fall there. In addition, there are different methods in how people express their worship to our heavenly father. For a long time, I used judge individuals who were a little more expressive then me in their worship experience.

In the womb, John the Baptist responds with a leap for joy in the presence of God, then His mom Elizabeth immediately praised God, as she was filled the Holy Spirit. She saw it an honor to be in the presence of the mother of the Messiah, moreover the Messiah Himself. Few passages later, Mary declares, ““My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name” (Luke 1:46-49).

We have an audience of one, and that’s one we need to Worship. On Sunday morning, believers in Hawaii will have sandals and laid back attire. In Africa, some will display elaborate praise dances. In the orthodox churches in America, you might see suits, ties, and hymns. Newer generation churches might have jeans and a more contemporary sound. Culture and scriptures play a huge part in the way believers worship their God. Hands waving, hands down, crying, laughter, it all can be your response to your encounter with Christ. And after our encounter; How then shall we live?

Anchored in Reality

iStock-177559708.jpg

“It’s faith in something and enthusiasm for something that makes a life worth living.”      ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

Faith and enthusiasm both require objects. To be sustainable, you must know ‘what your faith is in’, and ‘if it is trustworthy.’ As the answers to these questions emerge, an ‘enthusiasm’ for that which is faithful and true will grow.

A quick warning about enthusiasm… the opposite is also true, that if you are enthusiastic about something that is not true and does not match reality, it will leave you worse off than at the start and more disillusioned than before.

So, I say dig deep, go beyond the surface platitudes and ‘work out your ‘foundation’ in fear and trembling’ for we are not messing around with what to eat for lunch, but the direction your life will take and it’s ends.

I promise you this, if you dig deep into God’s Word you will find the answers you seek. You may not like what you find because it contradicts all that you ‘wanted’ to believe, but if you go through the ‘crucible’ of change by applying God’s perfect Word, you will know truths that will anchor your faith in every storm and develop an enthusiasm that can and will carry you through all of life.

Dig deep into God’s perfect Word today, casting off all that has kept you from being what our God has desired for you.

Choose wisely.

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-4)

Rejoice! Pray! Give Thanks! (Part 2)

iStock-521936767.jpg

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing,  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I had a friend who used to say, “Some Christians look so sour that it is like they sucked up pickle juice in their noses with a straw.”

Well I know that is gross, but how true. You’ve been around them. No matter what good is going on around them, they are just plain miserable. They don’t even have to say anything – you can see it written all over their faces.

Welcome to this new week of Freedom Fighter blogs. I am rejoicing today that you give us a few minutes of your day to encourage you to walk in victory.

The word “rejoice” is a word that is used 238 times in the Bible. I guess that means it’s something worth looking at. Here is a quick synopsis of what I gleaned:

  • Rejoice about God’s goodness
  • Rejoice with you and your entire household
  • Rejoice when you bring your sacrifices
  • Rejoice as you celebrate and worship
  • Rejoice with fear and trembling
  • Rejoice over our salvation
  • Rejoicing comes from the heart
  • Rejoice regarding His mercy
  • Rejoice over righteousness
  • Rejoice in adversity
  • Rejoice in His name
  • Rejoice in His Word
  • Rejoice with the wife of our youth
  • Rejoice when something lost is found
  • Rejoice when a sinner repents
  • Rejoice in hope
  • Rejoice in truth
  • Rejoice in suffering
  • Rejoice when your children are walking in the truth

Several years ago, I went to the movies with several of our staff guys. We went to a 3D movie and when I got into the theater, the image on the screen was blurry with my 3D glasses.

I went to the manager to fuss over the blurry image. 3D movies cost more than the regular ones. He asked me which theater I was in and he said he would check it out.

When I went back in, it was still blurry – so now I was ticked. So I grabbed my glasses and started back to give him the what for. And on top of that two of the guys 3D glasses were busted.

Just as I was walking through the door, I looked down at the two broken pairs of glasses and saw these words written on them: 3D Glasses. Mine had these words: Polaroid! Ouch. My 3D glasses where tucked in my shirt pocket. I had never put them on.

I thought about that later. Isn’t that how some of us deal with life? When we look at life through the wrong lenses it totally distorts our perception and how we see.

If you are not rejoicing always or practicing rejoicing in the ways listed above, life really will be miserable, unhappy, and guess what – your lack of joy will rub off on others and you will become a joy robber vs. a joy giver.

Paul’s exhortation doesn’t give us much wiggle room: Rejoice most times? Rejoice some time? Rejoice when everything is going my way? Nope. It’s pretty straightforward = ALWAYS!!!

How are you doing in this area of your life? Are you a joy-robber or a joy-giver?

Rejoice! Pray! Give thanks!

What’s On Your List?

iStock-691599326.jpg

So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” – Mark 10:51a

Every once in a while, my wife will ask me to come food shopping with her. Upon entering the store, there are two different mindsets: hers, list in hand and on a mission to get what she came for, and mine, just wandering around looking for “who knows what?” Sometimes an employee of the store will inquire, “Can I help you?” My response is usually, “No thanks, just looking”. The outcome is my wife having received everything she came for and I, nonsense.

One of the most valuable benefits of our relationship with Jesus is that He wants us to come to Him with our needs and desires. How foolish it is when I am struggling with the issues of life and have a Heavenly Father who loves me and wants to comfort me, but instead I walk around window shopping, unprepared to come to Him with my burdens?

I guess for me the real issue is do I know what I need? Am I prepared to come to Him with the real issues in my life? My wife and I will meet up at the register and she’ll have the essentials in her basket, mine are usually comfort foods which, after consideration, are put back on the shelf.

There was a time in my life when I was desperate for a healing and I came to Jesus with a “shopping list” full of needs. In my crying out to Him, I could imagine Him asking me, “What do you want Me to do for you?” That began a process of healing of my soul that has forever caused me to be grateful and devoted to my Savior.

There are two occasions in Mark 10 where Jesus asks the question, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The first time is the inquiry of James and John, their answer was, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” The second was blind Bartimaeus, his response was, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.” Which one do we need and which one is the comfort food? I know there are times where we can come to God with our frivolous requests and desires, but I believe Jesus wants to cure our blindness first, and then we will see clear to ask what we really need. James tells us in an extreme case concerning our selfishness but I think it still applies, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures” (4:3).

So, maybe today God wants us to bring Him our shopping list of true needs, the issues that cause us pain and grief. Jesus says, Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  Amen!

If They Came to Our Church (Part One)

iStock-518117722.jpg

“Together, we are His house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself. We are carefully joined together in Him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.”- Ephesians 2:20-21 (NLT)

It’s a bright, sunny Sunday morning and you have been blessed with greeting the people that enter the doors of the church building you are a member of. As “Good Morning, so glad to see you” is being repeated among everyone in the lobby, you notice a few men dressed in tunics and sandals walking up the sidewalk. You quickly go to the door and with your best smile and bulletin in hand you introduce yourself. “Good Morning friends. My name is (fill in the blank), welcome to our church. Here’s a bulletin to inform you on what our church is about and a guide to today’s service. What’s your name?” And with a weary smile from each you hear the names, John, James and Peter. They walk by you and take a seat….hmmm.

If the apostles were to show up in our church what would they think about how we all have been handling the church that Jesus Christ envisioned? Would they give credibility to the Vatican for their part in preserving Christianity or would they side with the Protestant Reformers for restoring the Gospel message back to its pristine purity? How would they feel about the Christmas plays we put our youth through by having them perform the events leading to the birth of Christ or, here’s one, what would their take be on the “Easter Bunny?” How about music? Would they prefer Fanny Crosby, the Gaither Vocal band, Hillsong or maybe take a chance with one of my personal favorites P.O.D?

In any case, I believe they would only be able to run all this through the basic foundation that they were given by Christ Himself. What they were essentially taught, trained and commissioned to do was to, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20a). I don’t believe there was discussion of denominational doctrine, although I believe that a doctrine was made pretty clear to them during the time they spent with Jesus.

The root for this doctrine is “that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:47) and that it did really begin in Jerusalem. AND if we were to take a look at what that early church looked like, you need not to go very much further than the Book of Acts 2:42-47. This is, in my opinion, the mainframe of the church. I don’t see anything in there that a band named “All The Lost Souls” performed in Herod’s Temple while Pastor Smiley Guy (you can figure out who that is on your own) gave a powerful message on the positivity of salvation in something or another and three thousand people gave their life to the idea that good stuff was just around the corner. Nope…don’t see it. What I do see is unity of community. What I do see is church.

Now don’t me wrong, there were traditions that the early church had to be worked through in order for it to be refined to what Jesus Christ designed it to be. I have been to many Bible Studies that went over what the Tabernacle was really meant to be. All those Jewish feast days had their place as tools for teaching the attributes of corporate worship, and let’s not forget that the early church saw themselves as a “remnant of Israel” as they were slowly finding out that they were no longer under The Law but were now under grace. The First Century church didn’t take that for granted, not like the Twenty First century church does today (yeah, I went there).

The next time I am with you, I will take a glance at what the Jewish folks had to work through and the conversion of the Gentiles from their paganism to relationship with a Triune God, but until then do the church a favor and pray for it. Pray for the leadership that guides it along its journey. Pray that they model themselves to be that church in Philadelphia that we read about in the 3rd chapter of Revelation. Pray that its foundation remains in Christ Jesus so that “the gates of Hades shall not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18b) and pray that the church will gain the discernment needed in these very troubling times. Amen?

Requiem for a Reputation

iStock-629642146.jpg

If we are wise, we will do what Jesus said: endure the cross and despise its shame for the joy that is set before us. To do this is to submit the whole pattern of our life to be destroyed and built again in the power of an endless life. And we shall find that it is more than poetry, more than sweet hymnody and elevated feeling. The cross will cut into our lives where it hurts worst, sparing neither us nor our carefully cultivated reputation. It will defeat us and bring our selfish life to an end.
~A. W. Tozer (1897-1963)

Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
~ My King, oracled by Isaiah, in Isaiah 53

Oh beloved, it is true.

We, each of us, will find that the pain of this world is too great to bear. Many of us formerly lost boys from The Colony of Mercy know that the pain of this existence can be maddening. It tears at our souls and dares us to try and find a way through.

Oh, we tried. We hammered chemicals and images and anything else we could find. To somehow, of god please!, make it stop.

Still, and thankfully, most of us have found freedom from this foolishness that dominated us. We had been sitting there on some tiny little throne of our own making, and trying to build a kingdom of our own comfort; failing all the while.

And He broke through.

It was like the moment in so many believer’s lives. Somehow the curtains were pulled back, and He enabled us to see both our incredible foolishness, and His astounding goodness. These were two things separated by an infinite distance, that only Jesus could leap across…. We called, and He came running to our rescue.

Still, and painfully, the freedom we know that we have found on the inside does not always (sometimes ever) work its way into the consciousness of others who knew us in our past. And actually, most of these people saw us at our worst – while we were faded out, unconscious, or laying in a pool of whatever had spilled around us, or out of us.

But still, the freedom HE gives us is real. There is no need to even prove it. But, it is our desire that others might see it. Our godly sorrow has created in us a powerful energy that both desires to live free (oh! Don’t we hate it when we fail?!?!), and for others to see the same freedom that is possible.

Can we see it, though?

Many, or even most, will never see it. They might be old friends, or family members, or coworkers, or whoever. But, for them, it may be something that they just cannot overlook.

Maybe too much of our failure got all over them.
Maybe too much of our pain injured them.
Maybe too much of our selfishness sucked too much life out of them.
Maybe the miracle G_d has done in us, is something they themselves are not ready to see.

This fool of a writer left one hell of path of destruction in his past. My heart was so broken over so much pain in my own life, that i could not see how much pain i was laying down on others who i supposedly loved.

But now that i have truly learned to Love, while i find that while i can more clearly see the pain of others, a tender heart is also more easily hurt by the ongoing years of loss of relationship with those who used to be the people who were closest to me.

What to do?

Nothing. Just let it hurt. And oh, it will hurt.

Oh beloved, there really is no answer to some of the conundrums of our lives. They are lives both drenched in the Joy of His Presence, and sometimes flooded with the sorrows of this world. However, we are not alone any more. There is One Who knows exactly how we feel. He is, in fact, feeling it with us – right here, and right now.

So, have you hurt others? Confess, and know you are forgiven. Make the amends that you can, and allow His Grace to enable you to live in such a way that you will never give them reason to hurt on your account again. But, know this: your (and this fool of a writer’s) reputation with other humans may never be repaired. Love requires that we do not try to force others to see us any other way than they are willing to see.

Tonight is your night. Time to allow your reputation to be buried. And, it is time to allow your freedom to set you free from the expectation that this will ever be different in this life.

Written by Makala Doulos: Makala Doulos is a child of G_d, a husband to his wife, a father to his children, and a teacher to his students. But mostly, he is a prisoner set free by Jesus. Love has invaded his life, crushed it, and made it new. Now, G_d’s Love is what constrains him to live in full surrender to the freedom The Father and Son and Holy Spirit have bought for us all. Grace and Peace to you all.

This Week’s Verse to Memorize:

“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.” Psalm 4:1

Swim For New Horizons

“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.”         ~ Faulkner

If you have ever put together one of the ‘Lego’ kits that makes a ship or a particular character, you know how many pieces (tiny pieces at that) it takes to make it look like the picture on the box lid. You also know that once those pieces are mixed in with others from other sets, getting back to the original design is quite the chore. O, it’s possible, but… the instructions become really important. You spend a lot of time studying the pictures and looking for specific pieces that match in order for it to resemble its original intent. Operating according to the design is hard enough for most of us when we are working right from the kit, but redeeming the design from a muddled state of affairs requires patient reliance on the ‘One’ who designed the kit in the first place.

Our God, and our Creator, has told us how this life works. He has given us words of wisdom to direct us like, “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5), and “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4), as well as “Call on the name of the Lord and you will be saved” (Rom 10:13). Now if we follow these instructions, God assures us that we will know peace, joy, contentment, and all that is His will be at our disposal. Our problem is we desire autonomy and want to do it our own way, rejecting God’s design… but isn’t that how we end up with the muddled pile of “Legos’ in the first place?

In order to redeem our lives from these muddled piles we have made, we must recognize whom and what we are dealing with. God is “Absolute Perfection”, having no fault or flaw. Therefore, His design is determined and can be participated in only by following His Word (the instruction manual). It is when we “delight” or find enjoyment in His Word, digging into it with a thirst for understanding; and having trusted Him because we have gazed intently into His instructions and obtained a rational faith in His perfect (flawless) nature; it is only then He is able to give us “the desires of our heart.” There is no other way, His is perfect!

I pray that you go beyond the casual glance at His Word today and dig deep into His instructions. I pray that as you find delight and understanding in Him, the gates of His love will open, spilling hope and joy into your muddled soul. God wants to redeem you, He desires to pour into your life all joy and contentment, but you have to do it the “Perfect Way.”

Choose Him, Choose Wisely…

“Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way, there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:10-11)

Rejoice! Pray! Give Thanks!

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing,  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Our 2017 Family Conferences at America’s Keswick are about to begin, and I would like to remind you that you can participate in three ways:

  1. You can come for a week with your family and enjoy the ministry of God’s Word from some of America’s finest preachers, worship in music as Robert and Joyce Hayes lead us, and enjoy the many fun new activities including our Bounce House and Archery tag.
  2. If you can’t attend for a week and live locally, you can come to all the sessions. The evening sessions (Sunday-Thursday night) are at 7:00 PM and the morning sessions (Monday – Thursday morning) are at 9:30 AM.
  3. Can’t attend live? You can watch all the sessions live or go back and watch them anytime this summer (americaskeswick.org/watchlive)

Our theme this year is HOW SHALL WE LIVE – Rejoice! Pray! Give thanks! Our Bible teachers will be unpacking the theme as they share the messages God has placed on their hearts.

Our theme verse is 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and follows Paul’s teaching about the “day of the Lord” – 1-11. In typical Paul style, he follows up his teaching with practical application of the truth he has just shared.

Verses 12 -24 are chock full of practical ways for us to live in light of the Lord’s return. It is worth you taking a few minutes to read these amazing verses.

But our focus this summer is on verses 16-18, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how to translate these commands so that they are more understandable.

They are actually on-going commands versus a one-time action. In other words keep on rejoicing, keep on praying without ceasing, keep giving thanks.

Let’s go to the end of the verse and ask the question, “Do you want to know God’s will for your life?” Doc Cawood from Cairn University used to say, “If you want to know God’s will for your life, do what the Word already tells you to be the will of God for your life.”

In these three verses, Paul makes it plain that these three action commands are indeed God’s will for our lives.

This summer at America’s Keswick we will be applying these three principles in a variety of ways:

IMG_0146Rejoice – we had dedicated a wall in the Raws Family Room that will display pictures of people who make decisions to trust Christ as their Savior this summer. The word rejoice in the New Testament is often tied in with rejoicing over a sinner who converted = something lost is now found.

Pray without ceasing – We normally have dedicated morning prayer sessions, but this year we are planning to invite our guests to pray around their tables in the Dining Room before we scatter for the activities of the day.

Give thanks – in the hallway of the Raws building we have three windows and we are encouraging our guests to write and post notes for things they are thankful for. It has been cool to see the notes posted since we started this Memorial Day weekend.

We’ll unpack these three verses more next week. But for now, the take-away for this week is – How Shall We Live? Rejoice! Pray! Give Thanks!
