Are You Gentle?

iStock-847506340.jpg

By the time you read today’s Freedom Fighter blog, the 2018 Super Bowl will be history, and my prediction was that the Philadelphia Flyers will have defeated the Yankees.

My house was very divided over this year’s games. My grandson Tanner is a Minnesota Vikings fan, Josh is an Eagles fan, and Zach is a Patriots fan. Talk about tension!!!

I sorta feel about the Super Bowl like I do congregational meetings. I don’t like them. 🙂

Growing up, I dreaded congregational meetings!!! They made me sick at my stomach because we would watch people who were normally really cool people turn into vicious, unkind, mean people. And quite frankly, not much has changed. One of the last church business meetings we attended at a local church we were attending, I was so appalled and embarrassed at how the saints behaved, that Jan and I said ‘we can’t do this anymore.’

And I am sure that some of you saw the media comments of social media that probably fit the same description of the congregational meetings I’m talking about.

It would appear that for some reason when it comes to sporting events or congregational meetings, reason is tossed to the wind. Not only is reason tossed to the wind, but our ability to get along God’s way seems to be tossed aside.

Viciousness. Unkindness. Rudeness. Sarcasm. Meanness. Well, they are just a few of the words that I would use to describe the behavior that I observe when it comes to sporting events and congregational meetings.

I often think about what new believers or visitors must think when they attend most business meetings. What does this do for our testimony and the cause of Christ?

What is it about situations like these that we feel like we can toss aside biblical principles to justify bad behavior? These would most likely be the same people who mouth off about something that was undoctrinal about another church or a speaker/preacher/author they didn’t like, or point out issues with another brother or sister that was off base. But for some reason – situations like this become acceptable behavior?

Paul wrote to the church at Philippi: “Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.”

Ah – maybe that is the disconnect. Maybe, just maybe we forget that God knows, weighs and sees every one of our thoughts deeds words and actions?
If the Lord were physically in the room during a congregational meeting, would we be apt to say the things that we do? Or would we consider more carefully our words and attitudes?

What I am NOT saying is that there isn’t a time to speak out or speak up. What I am saying that we can’t check our gentleness at the door and decide that we get to choose when we are gentle.

Grab your concordance and look up the word and check out the context. Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit. James addresses how gentleness plays into using wisdom.

Whether you are an Eagles or Patriots fan doesn’t mean you get a free pass on gentleness. Hopefully, your team won. Hopefully, you were a good representative of your spiritual team. May it be said of you and me, we demonstrate a spirit of gentleness to everyone – “the Lord is near.”

Think about this: Treating a person with gentleness makes him or her want to move near you. Responding with gentleness teaches another person that he or she is safe in your care. It is an essential relational bond.

Position Changes Your Condition

iStock-522317349.jpg

“That Christ may make His home in your hearts through faith…” (Ephesians 3:17a)

Years ago, my wife and I were in an agreement that we would not move in together or move any of our stuff until we got married. We didn’t want to position ourselves as a married couple until we were actually married. After our big day, we merged our stuff and began to make reasonable decisions on living arrangements; we made a home for ourselves.

Our position went from single to married and things were different. Life as we knew it changed.

Alike, Christ is making (or I should say has made), His home in our hearts. Literally, not figuratively, I believe with a strong conviction that he is dwelling in the believer’s heart. He came to rest in our Spirits, the most intimate part of our being. We might be experiencing defeat in particular areas, which is our condition, but it doesn’t change our position.

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17)

By faith, embrace your new position in Christ. And watch how it changes your condition. The second part of the verse, “that you, being rooted and grounded in love.” (Ephesians 3:17b)

The Truth is What Matters

What matters is the truth and not what you think you’re firmly standing on.

When the Israelite spies showed up in Jericho to survey the city, they ended up at the home of Rahab the harlot. It was this unlikely woman who protected these men from those who would kill them in the city. Why she do it? It was because of what they had heard, and knew to be true about Israel’s God. She testified, “We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” (Joshua 2:10-11) So… if those inside the walls of Jericho knew ‘nothing’ could stand before Israel’s God, why did they willfully reject this truth and stand against Him? Was it not because they trusted the wall they stood on more than the truth that they knew?

It is true that you can live according to a lie for some time. ‘Ideas’ can be maintained until they must contend with reality. Those who stood on the walls of Jericho were quite confident for the first 5 days of Israel marching around the city and leaving. Probably by day 3 they could be found tossing down insults and garbage upon those who were acting in obedience to God’s Word. But on the 7th day things began to change… Israel didn’t go home after the first trip around the city… they continued for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th… can you imagine the uncertainty that crept into their hearts as Israel turned the corner on the 7th trip and the trumpets blew and the people shouted! And then… all that they had placed their faith and trust in began to crumble under their feet…?

What do you trust in? What are you basing your choices on? If it is not the Truth of God’s Word, which has consistently corresponded with reality, for all time and in all circumstances, what you are ‘standing on’ will come crumbling down around you. If not in this lifetime, then when you stand before God and must account for your choice to willfully and knowingly reject Jesus and His gracious offer of salvation.

The truth is powerful because it is what corresponds with reality. The lies that you believe are like the sand under your feet; unstable in every measure, causing everything built on it to come crumbling down.

Choose wisely….

“Therefore, since we ‘have awesome examples of lives lived by faith and in obedience to God’s Word’, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him (not trusting in anything but the Word of God) He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners (from those trusting in the own wall), so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” — Hebrews 12:1-3

Hunger for Righteousness: Born from Death to Self

Men’s Fellowship Night is THIS Thursday, February 8 at 6:15PM. Call us at 800.453.7942 for tickets!

iStock-471518055.jpg

When in the Holy Spirit the soul becomes kin to the Apostles, the Prophets, and all the Saints and Righteous Ones, then she is irresistibly drawn to that world, and cannot remain, but is bothered, and thirsts, and cannot cease from prayer, and although the body becomes exhausted and wants to lie down on a bed, even while lying in bed the soul longs for the Lord and the Kingdom of the Saints.
~St. Silouan the Athonite

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death He died He died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives He lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
~ from Romans 6

Oh beloved, it is true.

Each of us has a moral compass. As C.S. Lewis has said, this is one of the best arguments for a Supreme Being. The problem for us, though, is not that we have a moral compass. The problem is our inability to get the settings right on the dial, and for us to follow said compass when we do.

There is, though, truly a way. It is driven by our hunger.

Some of what makes us hungry is what we eat. If we keep stuffing ourselves full of the junk from the world, we know that we will crave it more and more. This we understand. For each of us has come under the sway of a habit or issue that doesn’t help us, but we get stuck in the rut of doing the things we don’t want to do, over and over (Read the end of Romans 7 for Paul’s lament on this).

And still, Jesus, The King of The Universe said it this way: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

So, how can we get hungry for the things that will truly satisfy?

There is a part of us that will never be satisfied with anything. It is immature. It is temporary. It is fallen, and can never be redeemed. Paul called this part of us our old man, or the flesh. And NO, he was not saying that our physical bodies were evil. He was talking about that part of us that takes its cues from the body, to the exclusion of every other voice within us.

And, even though it is the most temporary part of us, it does have (sometimes and often) the loudest voice. It will wail and demand our attention. But, as each of us formerly lost boys at the Colony know, listening to our flesh will never (not ever) give us what we want.

Can we see it?

The passage above gives us some very important insights into what happened to us when we trusted Christ and followed Him. He says that we were actually baptized (immersed, drawn down into an overwhelming flood) in Christ Jesus. And this same Jesus, in His death on the cross, drew us even further down under into His very death. This is profound. It is not a theological nicety. It really is the core of how we develop a new appetite for good.

Because, if we keep reading the passage above, we find that while the death He died drew us down in His death, it also launched us up into a whole new Life altogether. The dead part of us stayed dead, but the alive part of us is alive in a whole new, and eternal sense. This life joins us into the very family of G_d, and makes us teammates with the apostles, and prophets, and great believers across the ages.

When we understand this, we see that we are no longer part of some temporary, tiny little life, where we are trying to just get a few thrills and kudos before we kick the bucket. We have no need for bucket lists. We have no need to listen to the tiny little, lying voice within us.

We find, instead, that we have been joined to a very large, and very ancient family. We find that our activities can matter, forever, if we will let them. We learn that the believing and joyful obedience of other in the past have worked together to save our lives.  And then we see it…. Our lives can do exactly the same thing. We are eternal beings who can make an eternal difference in the lives of others. When we see this, we truly begin to have deep motivation and even ravenous hunger to do the right thing.

So, are you struggling with trying to do the right thing? This fool of a writer does, and too often. Maybe it is time for both of us to remember what happened to us in our conversion, and how truly big the family we are a part of really is. Knowing we are different, and knowing we can make a difference truly changes what we are hungry for!

Love has invaded his life, crushed it, and made it new. Now, G_d’s Love is what constrains him to live in full surrender to the freedom The Father and Son and Holy Spirit have bought for us all. Grace and Peace to you all.

The Place of O.T.

Image result for abraham and son

“The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.” — Genesis 12:1 (NLT)

So, I went on a Men’s Retreat with the guys from my church. I’m at a new church and I was hoping to use this event as a way to get to know the men that make up this body of Christ. To be upfront about it, I haven’t done this before, so to do this was to step out of my comfort zone and to go to a place other than America’s Keswick was also a step into a different direction. So, for the record, yes Dr. Welte, I did enjoy my time on the beach but it wasn’t the beach that was calling me. Even to be on the beach is a step out of my comfort zone, so why did I go on this retreat? Well, did you ever hear God call you to go to a different place, get there and find out that God has been waiting for you at the place you’ve been called to? Hear this out…

It’s the end of The Flood and YHVH has told the Noah’s family to, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth.” But apparently that didn’t happen. After time passed, people pretty much stayed in one place, so YHVH give them a kick in the tail and people went to different places speaking in different languages. And then one day some dude named Abram gets told, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you” (Genesis 12:1b). Now I’m not sure if YHVH was meeting Abram at the place he once was, but if you read Abram’s story in Genesis you’ll get a sense that YHVH indeed met with Abram on numerous occasions. Then the story takes a turn.

When we look at Genesis 22:1-19, we see that YHVH calls to the recently renamed Abraham and tells him to take his son, his only son, to the land of Moriah, to a mountain which He will tell him and offer Isaac up as a burnt offering. Now, I’m not too sure about you, but I ain’t too comfy with the idea of being Abraham in this story. Why? First off, I would want to verify if this was really YHVH telling me to do this, and if it was I don’t think I have it in me to do such a thing to my son… ya see, I only have one. But I’m also not Abraham, who out of obedience wakes up the next day and begins the three-day journey to Moriah. By the way, Scripture doesn’t let us in on whether Abraham had second thoughts along the way…he just went as he was told.

Now the thing to notice comes in Genesis 22:5, “And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship and return to you.” Now it is right here, at this moment in Scripture, we should take note that this doesn’t happen in modern day worship, we’re content to just bring the sacrifice of praise, but for this man, he is going to meet YHVH at the assigned place and he is bringing what he has been told to sacrifice. In verse nine, we see that Abraham arranges the wood (because we serve a God of order), binds up Isaac and just as the knife is ready to fall on the boy an Angel of the LORD says this, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” What an act of true obedient worship.

Worship seems to have changed over the centuries hasn’t it? As far back as Adam, worship required us to bring something to sacrifice upon the altar and then spill its blood to cover for our sin against Elohim El-Elyon, The Creator, the Most-High God. But now, it is important for us to understand that everything we do is an act of worship to the glory of God. Next time I’m with you, I’ll take a look at how the only Son brought worship to bunch of fisherman, and I’ll explain what happened while I was at Harvey Cedars, NJ. Until then, why not take a look at how you’re worshiping the God of the universe and see where your heart truly is with it and ask yourself, “Am I meeting God at this place?” If you are, great, but if you’re not why not lend an ear and hear “What thus saith the LORD!!” Amen?

The Power of Prayer

iStock-502255488.jpg

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16

We are kicking off a special time of prayer beginning March 5 through April 13th. I am going to be encouraging our America’s Keswick Board, staff, and partners in joining me on a 40-Day Prayer Challenge as we prepare for our summer season.

Since making that decision, I have been digging deeper into my prayer life, and in my Bible and devotional reading, the topic of prayer keeps coming up.

I read this powerful story about prayer this week in the Our Daily Bread devotional, Great Is Thy Faithfulness.

While crossing the Atlantic on a ship many years ago, Bible teacher and author F. B. Meyer was asked to speak to the passengers. An agnostic listened to Meyer’s message about answered prayer and told a friend, “I didn’t believe a word of it.”

Later that same day, the agnostic went to hear Meyer speak to another group of passengers. But before he went to the meeting, he put two oranges in his pocket. On his way, he passed an elderly woman who was fast asleep in her deck chair. Her arms were outstretched and her hands wide open, so as a joke he put the two oranges in her palms.

After the meeting, he saw the woman happily eating one of the pieces of fruit. “You seem to be enjoying that orange,” he remarked with a smile. “Yes sir,” she replied. “My Father is very good to me.” “What do you mean?” pressed the agnostic. She explained, “I have been seasick for days. I was asking God somehow to send me an orange. I fell asleep while I was praying. When I awoke, I found He had sent me not only one but two oranges!”

The agnostic was amazed by the unexpected confirmation of Meyer’s talk on answered prayer. Later, he put his trust in Christ!

Yes, God answers prayer!

Do we really believe that God answers prayer? Sometimes He answers immediately. Sometimes He answers with a “no.” Sometimes he answers our prayers with a better “yes” than we could have even imagined.

God delights when His kids pray. Don’t miss out of the blessing of seeing God work in your life. Prayer is worth it. Have you taken time to pray today? If not, now is a great time to start.

Instant Sense of Guidance

iStock-671829818.jpg

Where are the young men and women of this generation who will hold their lives cheap, and be faithful even unto death, who will lose their lives for Christ’s, flinging them away for love of him? Where are those who will live dangerously, and be reckless in this service? Where are the men of prayer? Where are the men who count God’s Word of more importance to them than their daily food? Where are the men who, like Moses of old, commune with God face to face as a man speaks with his friend? Where are God’s men in this day of God’s power? ~Howard Guinness

I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor Me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you…. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. ~ Jesus, King of The Universe, in portions of John 16

Oh beloved, it is true.

Fear, I feel it gnawing at the edge of my heels, but the beautiful part is where it is biting. What kind of joy is this? To actually not care where one lives, or what one does, as long as it is in accordance with His will; this is true freedom.

“What?” you say. “What are you talking about, you fool of a writer?”

Just 13 days ago, my wife and I walked into work. This is quite normal for a Monday, but what was not normal was that we were scheduled to talk to the Head of School at 8:30am – together. And, when we arrived, the Headmaster dropped a bomb on our lives.

She got straight to the point. The regulations surrounding our permit to work in China were now being enforced in a different way than before. And, all bureaucratic gobbledygook aside, my wife was out of a job, and my job will end at the end of the school year.

Surprised is way too small of a word. We had thought that we were to come to work in China until, perhaps, the end of our race. We were both studying the language. And my Chinese was getting better. I had mastered nearly 600 characters, and felt like I was actually starting to ‘get it’ a little bit. Further, we were doing jobs that mattered, and we were helping to advance His Kingdom, in the Middle Kingdom of 中国。

And, basically, what we are beginning to see, is that this beautiful nation is undergoing a tightening of restrictions on sharing His Great Love, and doors are closing for many in this country. So, it is time to honor the wishes of our host government and bid farewell in June, 2018

Stuck, in so many ways, on the other side of the planet – is a very uncomfortable place to be.

Can we see it?

Jesus already told us that weird stuff is going to happen to people who serve Him and, in all of this, we have not even been counted worthy of suffering physically, or giving our lives. When we are doing good, when we are following His will – we will encounter resistance.

But, that’s not all. In the midst of the dark and confusion and pain about decisions on visas and work permits and learning impossible languages, He does speak to us. This makes all the difference. His Word is always full of guidance, and, in the stillness of our inner man, His Spirit also speaks and tells us of the next steps.

So, just as surprisingly as us losing our jobs, is the calling He has for us now. He is leading us to move to Arizona and to bring His message of His Great Love to people there in that dry and dusty land.

So again, are you wondering why something just happened? Are you honestly trying to listen to Him and follow His lead? Good. You are probably in just about the right place. Let the bombs go off. He will protect you. And then… be ready to hear His Voice. He will tell you of things to come.

Tonight is your night. Wait. Listen. Obey.

The soul that loves God has its rest in God and in God alone. In all the paths that men walk in in the world, they do not attain peace until they draw nigh to hope in God.

“And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” (Acts 4:33)

This week I was having some basic car troubles, and it delayed my daily schedule. The car is usually in fine shape and proved reliable on many occasions. Thus far, the car exceeded my expectations and even passed the recommended miles of the manufacture.

However, it wouldn’t start because the battery was dead. The car is valuable resource that couldn’t follow through its intended purpose because it lost its power source.

Alike, we can’t effectively carry out God’s will if we aren’t operating with right power source, the right resource, the right connection. Have you been doing ministry with your own strength, excelling in your Church because of natural ability? Has your flesh lent itself to a certain need that mimics the work of the Lord?

“Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”  — 2 Timothy 3:5

Peter was connected to the accurate power source, and people were being saved. The whole community was impacted. Let’s not only consider our holy huddles because it’s safe, but tap into the power of Christ and watch a whole community change.

Now that’s power!

Putting Your Head on the Pillow

iStock-801008532.jpg

When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.

Psalm 63:6

There are some interesting answers to the questions I often ask men who are struggling in life, “Do you know where you want to go” is one of them. The inquiry usually causes some conflict because most men don’t know the answer. However the pondering of the question can begin the journey. If I can challenge you to consider the path of your life, then the journey becomes defined.

I was always told one of the biggest reasons to work hard and lead a good life was the reward of being able to “put your head on your pillow at night.” For me the path of life is usually pondered in my bed, that special time of lying awake and considering where I am and where I should be going. The time lying awake could be a beneficial time or a time of torment. Most of us have trouble sleeping because of the conflict that we have concerning life. Sleepless nights are usually the symptoms of a troubled soul.

It’s funny how when my wife and I go to bed she will often take that time to get my attention. The posture of lying down and quieting my spirit tends to give way to a deeper thought process. Pillow talk with God is also a time for Him to get my attention. The difference between a good night sleep and a restless night depends on the conversation. In Psalm 63, David is running for his life from Saul because of the great success God gave David in battle. The greeting David received from the women coming out to greet King Saul started a resentment from Saul towards David, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

There was probably a big contrast between the sleep David was having compared to Saul. We read later on that the troubled spirit that haunted Saul caused him to seek mediums and fortune tellers, at one point there is a strange account of Saul summoning Samuel from the dead (1st Samuel 28).

Psalm 63 reveals a pattern that David followed that kept him in perfect peace. He was able to consider the goodness of God by seeking Him.

So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,

To see Your power and Your glory.

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,

My lips shall praise You.

David’s recognition of God is a key ingredient to a good night’s sleep. The counsel I often give a man who is having trouble sleeping is the read some of David’s other writings; “Read Psalm 51 and 139 and call me in the morning.” These meditations lead us to focus on God and the necessary steps to peace with God. Confession, repentance and the acknowledgement of who God is brings us to a place of rest for our souls.

So, if you’re having trouble sleeping, “meditate on Psalms 51 and 139 and call me in the morning.” Amen!

Daily Quote: “An unschooled man who knows how to meditate upon the Lord has learned far more than the man with the highest education who does not know how to meditate.” – Charles Stanley

This Week’s Verse to Memorize:

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, Psalm 33:18

Faith that Works II

A man with his head bowed and holding a holy bible in prayer

Man praying while holding a Holy Bible.

12 years ago, when I entered the Colony of Mercy, I had developed abandonment issues, trust issues, fears, anxieties, and a host of other unhealthy dispositions. These were fueled by various traumatic events, dishonest people, my own sin and the like. In that, I began the journey with less than a mustard seed of faith – basically, a skeptic.

However, the Lord and many of His people demonstrated that faith is not formed by my past circumstances or any of those people. I began to trust.

Then, I was confronted with a ghost from my past that was about to change the trajectory of my life. I was charged and handcuffed for a crime that was committed a year before I entered the Colony. The charges could potentially land me in jail for really long time. I could lie or fight with a lawyer. But God!

The Holy Spirit’s conviction, “If you use your old resources, or old ways of doing things, to handle this matter than you are in no better condition than before you entered the Colony.” And by faith I trusted the Lord and pleaded guilty. And through faith the good Lord gave me grace.

Here’s how Sir Francis Drake addresses faith:

“Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves,

when our dreams have come true because we have dreamed too little,

when we arrive safely because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things, we possess,

we have lost our thirst for the waters of life, having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity, and in our efforts to build a new earth,

we have allowed our vision of the new heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas, where storms will show your mastery, where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizon of our hopes, and to push us into the future in strength, courage, hope, and love. This we ask in the name of our Captain, who is Jesus Christ.”
