We Worship Thee

We Worship Thee
I came across this prayer written by Henry W. Frost. Good way to start your day as you think about worshipping our great God:
O holy God, undone by guilt depressing,
We come to Thee, our every sin confessing;
Grant us, we pray, Thy cleansing and Thy blessing;
We worship Thee, O God!

Look down on us as low we bend before Thee;
Hear Thou our prayer, we fervently implore Thee;
Accept our praise, as our fond hearts adore Thee,
We worship Thee, O God!

Keep Thou our souls entirely true and holy;
Preserve our spirits deeply pure and lowly;
Add strength to strength that we may serve Thee wholly;
We worship Thee, O God!

Bind us to Thee that naught from Thee may sever;
Protect our lives that we may grieve Thee never;
Enshrine our hearts that we may love Thee ever;
We worship Thee, O God!

Give us last, the house of Thy preparing,
That face to face, Thy heavenly glory sharing,
We praise Thee, our love for e’er declaring;
We worship Thee, O God!

Today is HIS day – We worship THEE, O God! – Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s Keswick

Compass Pointers: It seems a lot of Christians are quick to condemn the world and write its inhabitants off as lost causes. It’s odd, though, Jesus never did. He healed and lovingly confronted. Jesus engaged and walked among his enemies, not to breathe fire upon them but to breathe life into them. He could only do so by being part of their lives. He didn’t write books, he didn’t constrain his preaching to only the synagogues, He didn’t stand aloof bad mouthing the world and his enemies to his disciples. No, Jesus deliberately walked and lived amongst those he came to serve. Katherine Walden

Never Quit, Never Give Up

                                        Never Quit, Never Give Up
I love when our grads of the Colony of Mercy share with me what God is teaching them. Today’s devotional is from one of our grads:
Psalm 51:10  Create in me a pure heart, O God and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
   Man! Did I need to hear this verse today. I have had bad days before and can expect them from time to time. But today however went “ALL WRONG.” After a miserable day at work and looking forward to coming home to my family for support I passed them on my way home. OH! YEAH! Youth Group! AAAHH!  Well I suppose I could talk to my dogs but somehow it’s not the same. As I prepared to eat my dinner hands on my head I thought this food doesn’t even look appealing.
You know it’s bad when FOOD doesn’t work. I just wanted to throw in the towel. As I began to search my heart in the places I am capable of going, it was obvious that my old man was trying to creep back in. My heart started to recognize what was discouragement and what was truth. And the truth is, Jesus told me that I would be persecuted and that there would be trials and tribulations and to consider it all joy while enduring them. HUH!  I was not very joyful. Crawling under a rock sounded better. And then, in my thoughts I saw Jesus carrying His cross, or was it me carrying my own?
As I began to pray, my exhaustion turned to strength and it was then I realized that one foot in front of the other was the only way to walk. Trust and Obey, Trust and Obey. My dinner seemed more appealing now and so I ate in the presence of the Lord. I was also reminded of two passages in scripture that caught my attention directly relating to my experience today.
In Mathew 4 where Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights fasting. Jesus came face to face with the devil himself, 3 times Satan tempted Jesus, and 3 times Jesus stood firm with a steadfast spirit and a pure heart quoting scripture. This event reminded me how important memorizing scripture is in fighting off the enemy.
   The second account was in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus had gone out to pray not far from the disciples and it was in this particular account that Jesus was at His weakest point, yet also at His strongest yet He DID NOT SIN. Luke 22:42-44. Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from me; nevertheless not My will,  but Yours, be done. (Our Lord was REALLY DISTRESSED here) An angel appeared to Him and strengthened Him, and being in agony, He prayed more earnestly and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling to the ground.
 I have to say brothers, that my worst day here on earth cannot come close to what Jesus experienced in those two accounts. Where will you run? To your old way? Or To the foot of the cross?   Keith Varga is a graduate of the Colony of Mercy

Redemption Choruses

REDEMPTION CHORUSES
“Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy.”  (Psalm 107:2)

            Here is truly a song of victory.  It is a clarion call for the redeemed of the Lord “to say so” and to proclaim God’s wonderful mercy in making us trophies of His grace.  Four different redemption scenarios portray the evidence of such mercy, all concluding with the grateful refrain: “Oh, that man would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wondrous works to the children of men”.
            To the solitary (vv. 4-9) who wanders alone in the wilderness of life, does this grace wonderfully reach. Finding nothing of lasting nourishment but crying out to the Lord, they find the deep soul satisfaction that they have been looking for all along.

            To the stubborn person (vv. 10-16) who foolishly despises the counsel of God so that his heart is brought down beyond help and hope, does God also mercifully intervene upon request, rescuing the trusting soul from darkness and the shadow of death.
            To the sick, (vv. 17-21) this mercy also comes.  Brought to the point of death because of their iniquity and foolish choices, they are saved out of their distress because He sends His word and heals them.
            And to the storm-tossed (vv. 22-32) who “go down to the sea in ships” to see the works of the Lord and acknowledge His “works in the deep,” does this mercy also come as they feel the plight of the human condition, mercilessly subject to storms and fears of life, but who in the midst of their trials, cry out to the Lord for help and see Him calm the waves, bringing them to their desired haven.  Such is the case with multitudes through time—and with you and me—who were willing to part with their foolishness and turn to the Lord in our need.  No wonder the psalmist says—“Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!”   Mark Kolchin is a teaching elder at Bethany Bible Chapel and serves on the Board of Trustees of America’s Keswick

Put Away Evil

Put Away Evil
So you shall put away evil from among you. Deuteronomy 29:21b
I know that you must think that we blog a lot about sin. We do. In the day in which we are living, we need constant reminders that God’s position on sin has never changed. HE HATES IT! He hated it so much that He gave His Son’s life to die for it!  I need to keep this hatred of sin ever before me.
Dr. Henry Blackaby reminds me in his daily devotional, Experiencing God – the Devotional (Broadman and Holman) that I must PUT AWAY evil:
It is a deadly and costly mistake not to take temptation seriously. The sad testimony of many who have succumbed to sin’s enticements is that that they THOUGHT they were strong enough to remain in the midst of temptation and resist it.

God requires that His people remove evil from their midst (Deut. 21:21b). One way to do this is to remove ANYTHING in your environment that may tempt you to sin. When wickedness surrounds you, you are in danger of becoming anesthetized to its destructive potential. NEVER ASSUME THAT YOU ARE IMMUNE TO TEMPTATION. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE CRAFTIENSS OF THE EVIL ONE.

God does not tolerate evil, for evil cost the death of His Son. Sin causes UNTOLD pain and destruction to EVERYONE it touches. Treating evil lightly shows foolish disregard for God’s redemptive work. An honest evaluation of your life will reveal temptations that you should remove, such as some forms of entertainment or ungodly relationships. WHEN GOD CONVICTS YOU OF EVIL IN YOUR MIDST, REMOVE IT IMMEDIATELY!

There are times, however, when you are powerless to remove ungodly influences, so you must remove yourself from temptation. Paul urges us to avoid EVERY kind of evil (1 Thessalonians 5:22). When Joseph was enticed to commit adultery by His master’s wife, he fled IMMEDIATELY! (See Genesis 39:12).

DO NOT LOSE YOUR ABHORRENCE of sin. Be diligent to keep ANY form of temptation out of your home, out of your relationships, out of your mind. You can do this only by maintaining your love relationship with God, recognizing that YOU are powerless to resist temptation in your OWN strength. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WALK CLOSELY WITH GOD UNLESS YOU SEE SIN AS HE SEES IT. Darkness and light cannot coexist. Run from darkness to the light!

A Jealous God

A Jealous God
For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. Deuteronomy 4:24
I call today’s devotional one of those “help-me-connect-the dots” devotionals. We too often have these “warm fuzzy feelings” towards God, and He wants us to love and enjoy Him – but we also need to be reminded of that He is also God – not just one of our pals and buds.
Dr. Henry Blackaby in his daily devotional, Experiencing God – The Devotional, reminds us that He is a jealous God:
Out God is a consuming fire. He is satisfied only when His love totally consumes us. We usually think of a jealous person as someone resentful and suspicious, but the Lord’s jealousy on our behalf is something that should be precious to us! He has the complete right to our lives. He gave us life, and He wants to protect us from ANYTHING that could harm us. That is why He commanded His children to worship no other gods, allowing NOTHING to distract us from His consuming love.

The Lord opposes ANYTHING that hinders our relationship with Him (Deuteronomy 6:15). He knows the danger of other gods, how they will lure us away, deceive us, and leave us empty. He will tolerate NOTHING that takes precedence over our love for Him! Our faithfulness to God assures us of the abundant life He wants to give us. IF WE REJECT HIM, HE WILL PURSUE US UNTIL WE RETURN TO HIM.

We should not resent the fact that God wants to guard our relationship with Him. It should bring us comfort. Our relationship with God should be our top priority. It should dictate how we spend our time, our money, our energy. If certain people or our possessions separate us from God, we must reexamine our hearts and give our devotion first to Him with ALL our heart, mind, soul and strength (Mark 12:30).

Our love for God should extend to EVERY corner of our lives. God loved us so much that He gave us His own Son. God loved us so much that He gave us His own Son. Let us respond by giving Him our highest devotion in return.

Putting Sin to Death

PUTTING SIN TO DEATH
“Turn (depart) from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalm 34:14)

I’ve shared this devotional before, but it is worth repeating. It is from our Keswick devotional, Real Victory for Real Life:

            How can you put to death the ruling power of sin in the deeds of your body?  Both negative and positive ways: “turn/depart” = negative; “do good” = positive.  You need to TURN “from” and TURN “to” in putting sin to death.

            From TEMPTATION: (1 Corinthians 10:13) there is no temptation beyond your ability to overcome.  God makes a way to escape every time.  Temptation is not sin – you have a choice to turn from temptation.
            To TRUST: (Proverbs 3:5-6) it is necessary to turn to trust in Christ.  You yield to temptation when you don’t really trust God that He will provide for the need that leads you into sin: drugs – what for? Steal – what for? Illicit sex – what for? Cheat – what for? Gossip – what for?  Doing for yourself means God won’t do for you.  So, turn to trust.
            From UNRIGHTEOUSNESS: (Zephaniah 3:5) God does no unrighteousness.  He brings justice to light through His Word.  The unjust knows no shame.  Unrighteousness is the lack of right in every area of your daily life: work ethics, entertainment, relationships, money, worship.  Turn…
            To UNDERSTANDING: (1 John 5:20) Jesus gives you understanding to know right – in order to know Him who is true.  You are IN Him!  Turn to understand that.
            From RAGS: (Isaiah 64:6) all your self-righteous acts are like filthy rags, and you will shrivel up life a leaf and be blown away by your unrighteousness.  Do you wonder why everything is messed up?  Turn from your rags!
            To RICHES:  (Ephesians 2:6-7) you are rich!  You are already raised up in God’s mind to sit in the heavens.  You have the riches of His grace and kindness.  Why chase the world to gain rags?  Turn to riches!
            From NATURAL: (Romans 6:19) in human terms, you are a member of a body.  In your flesh, you are weak and you fall.  You are a slave to uncleanness in your habits.  In wickedness there are no laws, rules, regulations or restrictions.  Turn from the natural man.
            To NEW: (Ephesians 4:23-24) be renewed in your attitudes which begin in your mind.  Put on (which involves the action of choices) the new man (created to be like God) in righteousness and holiness.  Turn to the new!
            Put sin to death today: TURN – from temptation to trust; from unrighteousness to understanding; from rags to riches; from the natural to the new.  Have a victorious day! Chaplain Jack Noel served at America’s Keswick for 18 years and is now “retired” and living in Lancaster, PA

The Power Behind Any Throne

The Power Behind Any Throne

“And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.” But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.” So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.” Matt 20:21-23 (NKJV)
I had a guy that I use to work with who coined a phrase once about a co-worker who thought themselves as one who had an influence with the higher ups in the company. He would say that this person would have “their footsteps all around the crime scene but you could never find their fingerprints on the murder weapon.” This meant that no matter how we thought a project should go, this person’s idea would always prevail no matter how off the wall it was and how it put others holding the ball (pretty much) if their idea failed…which they did with frequency. And we were the guys that had to do the cleanup work (Holding the ball) after the failure would occur and would have to hear that, “I was only offering advice; I never said you guys had to do it.” Which was true in a way, we would hear the “advice” from the program manager in charge of the department we worked for and not this person.

The thing about those who believe they are the, or they have some power behind a rulers throne is they really want their way to prevail but do not have the ability to handle it let alone the consequence of its failure. They prefer to be included in the victory but are nowhere to be found when there is defeat. They want their share of the spoils when they are gained but will not sacrifice themselves when it’s time to invest. And the most unfortunate thing that happens is when the one who sits on the throne refuses them or doesn’t have the ability to provide the spoils, the person who has place themselves behind the throne conspire to have the ruling party removed. And that can be a messy affair when it happens because it seems to always take either hostages or causes causalities.

During a recent conversation with my new employer the idea of “power behind the throne” came up. However in the back of my mind I thought of the “Sons of Thunder”, James and John, who may have encouraged their mother to approach Jesus as it is written in the Book of Matthew. After considering what He said about twelve disciples sitting on twelve thrones, it may have been a good idea to conceal any pride or vanity by having mom approach Jesus about getting the best seats in the kingdom. They had to know that she would approach the Savior in a very submissive manner after He acknowledged her to ask her question. What they didn’t count on was the response Jesus gave to them. Sure it was easy to say that you are able to drink from the cup but to be told that greatness will come from serving? Whaaa?

You see the other disciples heard what was going on with the sons of Zebedee and their mother so they got all fired up as well. Jesus lets them in on who it is that really sits on the “Throne.” They had it somewhat a skewed and Jesus reminds them how it is among the Gentile rulers versus how it is with the Ruler of All. You want to be great in His eyes…you best be getting yourself to serving those around you. The crux of the whole matter rest’s in this, “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

No matter where we work, there is going to be someone who has deemed themselves higher than you just because they happen to have the cell phone number of the boss. Just as long as they aren’t the mother of Nero or the first emperor of China you should still be able to keep your head on your shoulders. And even if they don’t have much grounded knowledge in the practical and cause you to have to bear the weight of an idea gone wrong, it pales in comparison to what Jesus speaks to in this passage of Scripture. The important thing here is that you were able to serve a person who needs a serving of what the “Throne” provided, and that was His Son, Jesus Christ. – Chris Hughes is a graduate of the Colony of Mercy and a frequent Freedom Fighter contributor

My Song Shall Be of Jesus

My Song Shall Be of Jesus

One of my dear friends gave me a copy of an old Keswick hymnal that was used in England at the Keswick conventions. From what I can figure, it was published in the mid 1930’s. This hymnal has no music scores just the words. I came across this powerful hymn in the section marked “Praise and Prayer”:

My song shall be of Jesus;
   His mercy crowns my days,
He fills my cup with blessings,
   And tunes my heart to praise.
My song shall be of Jesus,
   The precious Lamb of God,
Who gave Himself my ransom,
   And bought me with His blood.
My song shall be of Jesus;
   When sitting at His feet,
I call to mind His goodness,
   In meditation sweet:
My song shall be of Jesus,
   Whatever ill betide;
I’ll sing the grace that saves me,
   And keeps me at His side.
My song shall be of Jesus;
   While pressing on my way
To reach the blissful regions
   O pure and perfect day:
And when my soul shall enter
   The gate of Eden fair,
A song of praise to Jesus
   I’ll sing forever there.  – Mrs. Van Alstyme

Pray Continually

“Pray continually.”   I Thess 5:17

Please join me…

            in ASKing God to give us grace/power to keep Him in the center of our thoughts, this day/week/month/year.  It is a FIGHT, and not merely a FIGHT of our wills/efforts/agendas, but at the same time, a crying out to Him, to empower us in the FIGHT to keep Him central to each minute of our day.  Impossible goal, without the God of the Impossible, and without recruiting prayer from His people, from my friends and yours, to pray for this impossible dream.

            The minutes which ARE filled with a God-consciousness are MORE than worth the frustration/disappointment of the minutes of failure.   The JOY and PEACE of living and working out of communion with the God of the Universe, is priceless, precious, the pearl of great price, worth selling all to get.  Human accomplishment, even ministry accomplishment, is OVERrated, and communion with Jesus, is UNDERrated.   Human talent/power achieves natural results, while supernatural power achieves supernatural results, and the Church today, including Dave, has way too much of the former, and not very much of the latter.
            The lost are not beating down the doors our churches wanting to know this Jesus who inhabits us, empowers us, to love them better than anyone they’ve ever known.  Us born-again Christians are considered by them, to be the very worst at loving/accepting people different from ourselves, politically, morally, theologically, educationally, economically, socially, emotionally, and they feel an agenda from us, to change them to be like us, and it doesn’t feel like unconditional love/acceptance to them: it feels like judgment, self-righteousness, holier-than-them: like they need to get their acts together, like we have ours together: the superior ones trying to convince the inferior ones.

            `Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus; `tis so stressful, fearful, discouraging, to trust in self, others, government, even Church.   I have no hope of having the supernatural love and supernatural humility necessary to compel the lost, unless I have the supernatural power that flows from living and working out of communion with Him.  Dave McCarty is a great friend and is the President of Gospel Friendships. Praise Your Way Out!

PRAISE YOUR WAY OUT!
“Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.”
(Psalm 33:1)

            Our team of missionaries was based at a church in one of the rougher parts of London.  We decided to put on an “international night.”  We printed up invitations, and spent a week on the streets encouraging the locals to come.  Our plan was to spend most of the evening entertaining them, then to ease our way into the Gospel.  When the big night came, about thirty guests had responded.  Half of them were young teens, and most of these had been drinking heavily and sniffing glue.

            We gave it our best shot.  The Swiss guy was funny, and the Korean flag dance was great, but our visitors were just mocking. Later on, in broken English a young Korean called Peter, (we couldn’t pronounce his real name), tried to share his testimony.  Someone threw a can of coke at him.  Peter looked up and said, “Before I Christian, Me, one punch, You, heaven!”  From that point on, anything could have happened.  I was the preacher that night, and due up after Peter.  Why me?    I recalled the words of a friend, “You will find yourself in situations that you just can’t pray your way out of; but you can always praise your way out.”

            And so I did.  In a room that was about to explode, I found God.  I told him how much I loved Him.  I thanked Him for taking me from the sewer and filling my life with joy.  I told Him what an honour it was to be in this place, on this night.  I was absolutely lost in His presence.  When someone tapped me and said, “You’re up,” the room was calm.  The ring leaders had left.  They must have gotten bored.  Those that remained settled in and I spoke for fifteen minutes on The Good Shepherd.  The end of the story is that three people came to know Jesus that night as Saviour and Lord.  Wow!

            And so now I can say to you, “You will find yourself in situations that you just can’t pray your way out of; but you can always praise your way out.”  There is never a time when it is not fitting for the upright to praise Him.  That includes in anything that you face today.
