Control Your Thoughts Before They Control You

Control Your Thoughts Before They Control You

There are Christians who suffer Panic attacks or Anxiety attacks. These are often caused by irrational fears. In back of all irrational fears are rational fears.

We must get back to the rational fear in order to cope with the other symptoms. There are three categories of rational fear: death, pain and the opinions of others.

We begin life with a natural fear of death and pain. When the doctor spanks the new born it is pain that teaches us to breath. If we did not fear death we would soon do something stupid that would cause death.

While my mother was trying to teach me not to be controlled by my peers she would still often say, “It is a shame for the neighbors when you come in late!” Thus I was taught to fear the opinions of others, even people we do not like.

As we move away from these primary fears toward obsessions we generalize them and they gain more control over our lives. What can we do about these forces?

Even our Savior faced the rational fears when approaching His own death. First, He found that the will of His father was in conflict with His own. He prayed for His cup be changed. Now, we need never fear a cup but the things in the cup. You can see how we begin to move from the rational to the irrational whether it be death, pain or opinions of others by calling it a cup.

You may never want to go through any of these problems. But in allowing God to have His way we can go through. When confronted with irrational fear know that it is only the rational fears that we need to fear. Yet even those fears we can endure when we recall, “Since Jesus goes with me I’ll go–anywhere!”

You can then relax until the “storm passes by” Learn to think other thoughts.

Living in the Will of God

Living in the Will of God

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)

The will of God is a wonderful place to be. Most Christians have experienced the difference in being in the will of God and being out of it. The consensus is that the most satisfying place for the Christian to live life is in the center of God’s will. Paul reminds the Christians in Rome that the Christian life properly lived will reveal the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. God’s will is good, acceptable and perfect.

The Bible not only admonishes us to live in the will of God, it also gives the guidelines by which we can know that we are in the will of God. In Colossians 3:15-17, Paul gives three clear guidelines for knowing the will of God.

First, is the peace of God, verse 15. Let the peace of God rule in your heart. The word rule carries the idea of umpire. In other words, let the peace of God umpire your heart. God has given boundaries and standards for Christian living. When the child of God is living within those boundaries and is living according to the guidelines of God’s word, peace will be an obvious state of mind. But when he steps outside God’s boundaries, the absence of peace is the indicator, the alarm, the “umpire’s whistle” indicating that he is out of God’s will.

Second, is the word of God, verse 16. Let the word of Christ dwell in you. There is no way to know the will of God apart from time in the word of God. And this does not mean an occasional lucky dip, grasping for guidance in a panic method. It means that there has to be a continual, systematic relationship with the Scriptures whereby day by day the Lord reveals Himself.

Third, is the name of the Lord Jesus, verse 16. Can you ask Jesus to sign off on the activities of your life? Can He endorse what you are doing? When the child of God is in the will of God, his life is endorsed by Jesus.

Remember, God’s will is good, acceptable and perfect! Roger D. Willmore is Senior Pastor Deerfoot Baptist Church in Trussville, Alabama. What Exactly Does Financial Freedom Mean?

What exactly does Financial Freedom mean?

Before we went on our little weShare 2010 journey in May we were talking about Financial Bondage on this blog. If you reread some of the posts from this spring, you will see that we discussed some of the symptoms of financial bondage in the believer’s life. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are on this earth for a much higher calling than pursuing a career or just earning a paycheck. We are on this earth to fulfill the Great Commission.

If you recall, we came to the conclusion that Financial Bondage in the Christians life is being at a place where we are unable to pursue that higher calling due to the bondage finances can bring. When the Holy Spirit leads us to a vital task in fulfilling the Great Commission and we are unable to respond due to the need to pay off our mortgage, credit card balances or just support a particular life style; we are in financial bondage.

When we get to a point in our lives when we are financially free to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, I believe we have achieved true Financial Freedom. If the Holy Spirit calls us to go into full time service or perhaps give 100% of our income to fulfill the Great Commission and we are at a point financially we can heed that call; I believe we are experiencing true Financial Freedom.
But wait, I believe that true Financial Freedom in God’s economy is even more than this. Yes, the above may be the ultimate earthly destination on our journey to live by God’s economy. But even while we are on that journey to live by God’s economy, God will use money in our lives to communicate important truths about Himself and to draw us closer to Him. Understanding these truths is also an important part of what true Financial Freedom is all about.

Money in itself is neutral. It can be used by Satan to pull us away from God and lead us into financial bondage. Or it can be used by God to draw us closer to Himself. Part of true Financial Freedom is allowing money to be used by God and not by Satan.

Over the next few weeks, I would like to consider some of the ways that God uses money in our lives to bring us closer to Himself. Maybe we are not at the point on our financial journey that we defined above, but no matter where we are, God can use money to teach us valuable truths. Understanding and applying these truths is part of true Financial Freedom in the Christians life.
I would love to hear your experiences on how God has used money in your life to draw you closer to Him or teach you about Him. — George Hutchison serves on the Board of America’s KESWICK and is an instructor for Crown Financial

The Basic Law of A Well-Lived Life

The Basic Law of a Well-Lived Life—Freedom Fighter Essay

When Bill Welte began writing Freedom Fighter several years ago, his intent was to help men find freedom from the bondage of addictions and life-dominating habits. That struggle for freedom is as old as human civilization, and it has always been a spiritual issue. Our sin leads us into bondage; whatever form the bondage may take.

The Apostle Paul, in Galatians 5, speaks about liberty and bondage. He speaks about the abuse of liberty—allowing it to become an “occasion for the flesh.” He also gives a list of sins—the works of the flesh—that easily become those life-dominating sins. There is a lot of bad news in Galatians 5!

The chapter also gives us good news! By divine inspiration, the Apostle tells us how to live in freedom, how to live well. “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:12&13)

Those who read Freedom Fighter and have fought the addiction battle know that we always make it “all about us.” Addictions bring a self-centeredness to our lives that is really ugly! The deeper the addiction, the more self-centered we become. Paul offers us an antidote to that problem.

He tells us not to fall into the trap of satisfying our flesh because we have liberty. Rather, we are to “through love serve one another.” In that statement and the words that follow it we find the basic law of a well-lived life. Like the Lord Jesus, we choose to live for others instead of ourselves. That is not complicated, and it is not easy. In fact, it is almost impossible unless we catch the rest of Paul’s teaching in Galatians 5.

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Vs. 16) While we live in liberty, we yield our lives and our liberty to the Holy Spirit. He empowers us to walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh. As His work continues in our lives, we live a well-lived life—a life devoted to others. That protects us from the self-centered behaviors that lead us into addictions.

For the follower of Jesus, all of this is about choices. We can choose a well-lived life, or we can choose to use our liberty as an occasion for the flesh. Just know we cannot have it both ways. By God’s grace, let’s make the right choice . . . one day at a time. — John Strain is Senior Pastor of First Baptist Toms River and a frequent contributor to Freedom Fighter

Happy Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July

“The Lord of hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our refuge.” Psalm 48:7

Today we celebrate the founding of America in 1776! Wow. We have come so far and yet we as a nation have drifted so far from the vision and purposes established by our founding Fathers.

I share this prayer/hymn with you on this Lord’s Day:

God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies,
Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.

Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast;
Be Thou our ruler, guardian, guide and stay,
Thy word our law, Thy paths Thy chosen way.

From war’s alarm, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to never ending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory laud, and praise be ever Thine.

Above and Beyond

Above and Beyond

“To Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think.” Ephesians 3:20

He did it again, guys! Every thing I opened this morning ganged up on me! I think it is so cool when that happens. I have to share this one with you, written by Puritan preacher, Thomas Lye, who lived from 1659-1689! It may have been written in the 16oo’s — but God used his message to speak to my heart in 2010! It is taken from a new devotional, VOICES FROM THE PAST — Puritan Devotional Readings. The book is available from the KESWICK ON-LINE Bookstore.
God’s almighty are is stable ground upon which saint may securely build their trust. His omnipotent hand spans the heavens (Isaiah 40:12). He is strong and mighty (Psalm 24:8) and created the world (Psalm 33:9). He is El-Shaddai, Almighty God (Genesis 17:1). His vast power far exceeds our needs, prayers, thoughts, and all that we could ever need, beg, or imagine. We can ask great things and can imagine even greater. God’s power far exceeds all. If we open our mouth ever so wide he can more than fill it (Psalm 86:10).
Creature-props are not able to bear the weight of an immortal soul. They are apt to crumble under us. But an almighty God is a rock. He that builds upon Him will stand, though the winds blow and the storms beat upon him (Matthew 7:25). On this Abraham built his transcendent faith (Romans 4:21) and David built his impregnable trust (2 Samuel 12:2-3).

Another ground upon which to to trust God is on his infinite, free goodness, mercy, and bounty. His heart is as tender as His strong arm. He is no less willing that able to relieve. “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him (Psalm 103:13). A father who sees his child in need and does not help, forfeits the name of father. He is not a man, but a beast.

The Lord is all compassion to His people, yes, and infinitely more than this. God alone is “the best.” Goodness is his darling attribute and his glory. Moses asked for God’s glory and was show His goodness (Exodus 33:18). Though we have nothing to plead or to prevail with God from within ourselves, there is an intercessor in God’s own bosom — His goodness! This will certainly and effectually intercede for our relief!

Wow! I have a Father in heaven, who is able to do far more abundantly than all that I ask or think. The question for me today is this — do I trust Him! Thank You, Lord, for this word from YOU today! — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

Be Still

Be Still

“I heard a hushed voice …” Job 4:16

I am sitting a porch in Ocean City enjoying a beautiful of the bay. The hot temperatures have subsided and for the moment the breeze is delightfully refreshing.

The flag outside is flapping, the birds are singing, the house is quiet at the moment. It has been a great setting for my time with the Lord today.

I have shared numerous times that I never ceased to be amazed at the timing of the Scriptures and devotional readings God has for me each day. This morning was another one of those amazing times of Him speaking to my heart.

Here was today’s reading from STREAMS IN THE DESERT …

Some twenty years ago a friend gave me a book entitled TRUE PEACE. It had an old medieval message and this one primary thought — that God was waiting in the depths of my being to speak to me if I would only be still enough to hear His voice!

I assumed this would not be a difficult thing to do, so I tried to be still. No sooner had I begun to so than complete pandemonium seemed to break lose. Suddenly I heard a thousand voices and sounds from without and within, until I could hear nothing except these incredible noises. Some were my very own words, my own questions, and even my own prayers, while others were temptations of the Enemy, and the voices of the world’s turmoil.

In every direction I turned, I was pushed, pulled, and confronted with indescribable unrest and overwhelming noises. I seemed compelled to listen to some of them and to respond in some way. But God said, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) Then my mind was filled with worries over my responsibilities and plans for tomorrow, and again, God said, “Be still!”

As I listened and slowly learned to obey, I shut my ears to every other sound. Soon I discovered that once the other voices ceased, or once I ceased to hear them, “a gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12) began to speak in the depths of my being. And it spoke to me with an inexpressible tenderness, power and comfort.

This “gentle whisper” became for me the voice of prayer, wisdom, and service. No longer did I need to work so hard to think, pray, or trust, because the Holy Spirit’s “gentle whisper” in my heart was God’s prayer in the secret places of my soul. It was HIS answer to all my questions, and HIS life and strength for my soul and body. HIS voice became the essence of all knowledge, prayer and blessings, for it was God HIMSELF as my life and my all.

This is precisely how our spirit drinks in the life of our risen Lord. And then we are enabled to face life’s conflicts and responsibilities, like a flower that has absorbed the cool and refreshing drops of dew through the darkness of the night. Yet just as dew on a stormy night, the dew of His grace never covers a restless soul. (A. B. Simpson)

Financial pressures, summer attendance numbers, two sons with job issues are just some of the concerns that have been crowding out my hearing His gentle whisper! Thank You, Lord, for reminding me today to BE STILL! What is crowding out His voice from speaking to YOUR heart today? — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

Not Good Unless Endorsed

NOT GOOD UNLESS ENDORSED

“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God –
and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” (1 Corinthians 1:30

In the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Proverbs, the term wisdom is often used to refer to the character of God. In the New Testament, there is further clarification of it in terms of its being invested in the person of Jesus Christ. “For it pleased the Father that in Him (Christ) all the fulness should dwell.” (Colossians 2:3). Our theme verse indicates that this wisdom invested in Jesus Christ is for us.

It is possible to paraphrase the verse to say in effect that Christ Jesus was made over to us and for our benefit. This One in whom the very wisdom of God is deposited is now delivered over to us who are in Him. In terms of a banking transaction, this would be a divine deposit made payable to us in the person of Christ (“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”).

From the divine standpoint the deposit has already been made and the benefit is available to all who are in Christ. However, before the benefit of this can be realized, we must endorse it by faith. A check may be donated based on a sound deposit, but if it is not endorsed by the recipient, it is of no benefit.

How can the benefits of the wisdom of God be described? There are three elements listed: righteousness – the status of being right with God, sanctification – the status of being set apart to God, and redemption – the ultimate release and deliverance awaiting us on the basis of the price paid at Calvary.

Have you endorsed by faith the deposited riches that God made payable to you in Christ? — Pastor Bill Raws was the grandson of the founder of America’s KESWICK and served for over 50 years.

Drawing on the Grace of God

Drawing On The Grace of God — Now We . . . plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain —2 Corinthians 6:1
I really appreciated the devotional written by Oswald Chambers on June 26th. I share with these with you because they have been helpful in my daily walk with the Lord. I trust it will be helpful to you today:
The grace you had yesterday will not be sufficient for today. Grace is the overflowing favor of God, and you can always count on it being available to draw upon as needed. “. . . in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses”— that is where our patience is tested ( 2 Corinthians 6:4 ).

Are you failing to rely on the grace of God there? Are you saying to yourself, “Oh well, I won’t count this time”? It is not a question of praying and asking God to help you— it is taking the grace of God now. We tend to make prayer the preparation for our service, yet it is never that in the Bible. Prayer is the practice of drawing on the grace of God. Don’t say, “I will endure this until I can get away and pray.” Pray now — draw on the grace of God in your moment of need. Prayer is the most normal and useful thing; it is not simply a reflex action of your devotion to God. We are very slow to learn to draw on God’s grace through prayer.

“. . . in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors . . .” ( 2 Corinthians 6:5 )— in all these things, display in your life a drawing on the grace of God, which will show evidence to yourself and to others that you are a miracle of His. Draw on His grace now, not later. The primary word in the spiritual vocabulary is now. Let circumstances take you where they will, but keep drawing on the grace of God in whatever condition you may find yourself. One of the greatest proofs that you are drawing on the grace of God is that you can be totally humiliated before others without displaying even the slightest trace of anything but His grace.

“. . . having nothing . . . .” Never hold anything in reserve. Pour yourself out, giving the best that you have, and always be poor. Never be diplomatic and careful with the treasure God gives you. “. . . and yet possessing all things”— this is poverty triumphant ( 2 Corinthians 6:10 ). — from My Utmost for His Highest

Are you struggling today with an issue in your life? Draw today on the grace of God. — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

Financial Bondage or Freedom — Till Death Do Us Part

Financial Bondage or Freedom — Till Death Do Us Part

America’s KESWICK has two other blog ministries in addition to Freedom Fighter. Diane Hunt and a host of our staff team ladies write a blog Monday-Friday — Victory Call. George Hutchison, one of our esteemed America’s KESWICK Board members and a instructor with Crown Financial, writes a blog — Stewardship Inisghts. Have your wife check out Victory Call.

I have been on vacation and am feeling brain dead and out of my routine. I missed posting George’s blog from last week, so here it is. Sorry, George!

Joyce and I have been on the wedding circuit this month. It seems like all of our friend’s children decided to get married this summer. In the period of a little over a month, we will attend four weddings. Right now we have two down and two to go. Let me tell you about the first two.

The families and weddings had some similarities and some differences. Both families are all boys. Both sets of parents are committed to the Lord. In both cases, it is my understanding that the financial burden of the wedding fell on the newlyweds. One of the weddings was on the east coast and one was on the west coast.
The one on the east coast was an incredibly grand event by the world’s standard. Everything was unquestionably first class. From the hors d’oeuvres, to the beverages, to the dresses, to the venue, to the cake, wedding favors and flowers; nothing but first class or better. The honeymoon continued with the same theme with one week in Hawaii and another in California.
I have no idea what the cost of the wedding was, but if I took Joyce out on an evening like that, our individual bill for the meal alone would be well over a hundred dollars. Multiply that times the approximately 200 people and add the cost of the flowers, cake, dresses etc. etc. and your mind is boggled by your guesstimate of the cost.I would not be surprised if when the east coast couple returns from their honeymoon there will be a significant pile of bills to be paid and credit card balances to be dealt with.
Last weekend we attended the west coast wedding. It also was a grand and glorious event. But it was very different. The venue was very nice but certainly not excessive. The hors d’oeuvres and beverages were limited to homemade ice tea, Country Time lemonade, coffee and water. The food was delicious and completely prepared by the bride’s family. The flowers and dresses were beautiful, but certainly not extravagant. The honeymoon took place less than 100 miles from the wedding and was over within 3 days. My guess is that most of this wedding was paid in full and there was little if anything to be paid after the honeymoon.
Next Monday, both couples will be back in their homes starting their married lives together. Both couples will start to work through the many different issues in their marriages. Both couples will have different ideas about when to buy a home, when to start a family and what the future holds for their lives.
But my guess is that one thing will be different. The west coast couple will work through these issues and make their decisions based on their understanding of God’s will for their lives and their love for each other.
The east coast couple will need to deal with the additional issue of the debt from the wedding. Their choices right from the start will be controlled by the need to pay off these debts. It will affect where they can live, where and how much they work and someday it may even determine if one parent will be able to stay home with a newborn child. Put very simply, their decisions are not totally theirs, because they are in bondage to their creditors.
I am not saying that one wedding was right and the other was wrong. They are different couples and not exactly in the same place in life. I care very deeply for both of these couples and will continue to care for them and pray for them no matter what choices they make.
But what I am saying is that the Bible is extremely practical and applicable to our lives today. This is especially true for newlyweds. It warns us about the dangers of financial bondage. (

Proverbs 22:7).

Be careful of buying into the world’s economy and the financial bondage that comes with it. Freedom from the stress of financial bondage is part of God’s economy. (

Proverbs 10:22) This is an important lesson for all of us, but especially those just getting married.
