Tips From a Parenting Veteran

“Train up a child in the way that he should go, even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

If you haven’t already figured out, parenting and grand-parenting are not for the faint of heart. Three of our kids are married and have kids of their own. Our son Zach is 12. At age 54, being a parent all over again should be easy — but guess what — we are still learning.

Pat Williams is certainly someone who understands parenting. He is the father of 19 children, including 14 adopted children from four different countries.

In his brand new book WHAT ARE YOU LIVING FOR — INVESTING YOUR LIFE IN WHAT MATTER’S MOST, Pat shares “TIPS FROM A VETERAN PARENT. I will share all nine tips today, and then tomorrow, I will give you an expanded list under tip #1.

Ready?

Tip #1 — Give kids the gift of your time!
Tip #2 — Affirm unstintingly
Tip #3 — Listen to your kids (with your undivided attention … no multi-tasking allowed)
Tip #4 — Focus on YOU being real, not perfect.
Tip #5 — Be consistent and dependable.
Tip #6 — ALWAYS discipline in love, not anger.
Tip #7 — Set a good example. Kids love modeled behavior!
Tip #8 — Don’t give up on your teens.
Tip #9 — Encourage kids to invest their lives in what really matters (you set the example!)

Good list? I will give you Pat’s expanded list on No. # tomorrow. Remember: your family is the ONLY thing you can take to heaven with you! — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

God’s WORD for You: Proverbs 8; Genesis 20-22; Matt. 6:19-34

Great Quote: I am tired of hearing the words “I can’t”. Jeremiah said, “I am a child”; but the Lord didn’t pat him on the back and say, Jeremiah, that is very good, I like that in you; your humility is beautiful.” Oh no! God didn’t want any such mock humility. He reproved and rebuked it. I do not like the humility that is too humble to do as it is bid. When my children are too humble to do as they are bid, I pretty soon find a way to make them. I say, “Go and do it!” The Lord wants us to “go and do it”. Catherine Booth

Four True Reasons for Living

Four True Reasons For Living

“For me to live is Christ …” Philippians 1:21

In his new book, WHAT ARE YOU LIVING FOR — INVESTING YOUR LIFE IN WHAT MATTERS MOST, Pat Williams, Senior Vice-President of the Orlando Magic, suggest four trust reasons for living. He suggests that they four reason will help us as men “to give purpose and value to our lives so that we can know that our life has eternal significance.”

Here are the four TRUE reasons for living:

“1. Character. God wants to shape and make us like Him. He wants our character to be like HIS character. The more we seek to pattern our lives after God, and after His Son, Jesus, the more we achieve His goal and purpose for our lives.

2. Influence. Our influence is the impact we have on the lives of others. Instead of living only for ourselves, God wants us to live for others and to pass on to the next generation our best traits, values, beliefs, and dreams for the future. Through our influence, the very best part of us lives on even after we physically die.

3. Parenting. Parenting is the process raising another generation to carry on our faith, values and meaningful traditions. Pat’s definition of “parenting” includes any form of guiding, discipling, training, leading, encouraging and affirming your people, whether we are biologically related to them or not. (Some of you are grandparents — we aren’t off the hook!)

4. Faith. What do we believe in? How are we investing in our lives? Are we using our time in ways that will count for all eternity — or are we merely marking time until time runs out? Our faith is our most important reason of all for living.”

Pat is one of my heroes and favorite authors. But I think he leaves out the most important reason — “For me to live is Christ …” Unless that is the burning passion of my life, there is no way that I can even come close to fulfilling the other 4. Living for Christ and allowing Him to live HIS life through me is the REAL reason for living. Are you living for HIM today? If not, today is the day to start that relationship with HIM. — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

God’s WORD for YOU: Proverbs 7; Genesis 18-19; Matthew 6:1-18

Great Quote: Grace remits sin and peace quiets the conscience. Sin and conscience torment us, but Christ has overcome these fiends now and forever. Only Christians possess this victorious knowledge given from above. These two terms, grace and peace, constitute Christianity. Grace involves the remission of sins, peace and a happy conscience. Sin is not canceled by lawful living, for no person is able to live up to the law…the fact is the more a person seeks credit for himself by his own efforts, the deeper he goes into debt. Nothing can take away sin except the grace of God. In actual living, however it is not so easy to persuade oneself that by grace alone, in opposition to every other means, we obtain the forgiveness of our sins and peace with God. –Martin Luther

If … Then

If … Then (Read Proverbs 2)

I guess I have spent so much time in this book of the Bible that I am amazed at how many insights I continue to glean.

As I read through Proverbs 2 in the ESV (http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?q=Proverbs+2), I was reminded of the many “If … then” passages in Scripture.

Think about this from Proverbs 2 — a text that preaches itself:

IF I … receive His words
Treasure up His commands by making my ear attentive (notice that it is an action on
my part not His) to wisdom
Incline my heart to understanding (first the truth goes in my ear then into my heart)
Call out for insight and search for His hidden treasures …

Then the LORD … gives wisdom, knowledge and understanding from HIS mouth — I will hear
from HIM.
Stores up wisdom for the upright
Is a shield for those who walk in integrity, guards the path of justice and
watches over the way of His saints.

Then I … will understand righteousness, justice and equity and every good path
His wisdom will come from my heart
His knowledge will be pleasant to my soul.

And look what I receive from Him:
Discretion
Understanding
Deliverance from evil
Eyes that will discern men who will not be a godly influence in my life
Purity from the allurement and entanglements to sexual sin
Eyes that will be open to the real motive behind lust and the idols of my heart.

Conclusion: I will walk in the RIGHT way and live a holy life.

It doesn’t get any plainer than that. my brothers. I would challenge you to think it through today. Are you willing to be a Freedom Fighter who will receive HIS word for you today? — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

Ten Suggestions for Prayer

Ten Suggestions for Prayer

“The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” James 5:16 c (NASB)

During the Christmas holidays I read a brand new book by one of my favorite authors, Steve Brown, of KEY LIFE ministries. It’s a refreshing look at the subject of prayer. In his book, APPROACHING GOD — ACCEPTING THE INVITATION TO STAND IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD (Howard Books), he gives ten suggestion for prayer. They are worth our consideration:

1. In order to see great power in prayer, you and I must have faith. (See Mark 11; Mark 9:24; Luke 17:5)

2. Faith doesn’t come quickly — it is a process! “Most believers ask for a mountain to be moved when their faith is geared better for a molehill. Pray that God would make you a bit kinder than you have been, that you would be more faithful in little things, that you would be a better dad — not perfect, just better. Then watch as God answers those prayers. The faith you receive from the answer will enable you to move to some bigger requests.”

3. Effective prayer is always in the parameter of God’s will. See 1 John 5:14-15

4. Effective prayers are specific. See James 4:2

5. Remember that God is God, and that He knows better than you do concerning what is needed. Be thankful that He has not answered all of your prayer YOUR way!

6. Know about the power of praise. Praise should always be a part of our praying.

7. Be obedient to what God tells you to do.

8. Keep on praying. See Luke 18:1-8 and Matthew 7:7-8

9. Don’t make demands; only make requests. See Job 42:2-6

10. God will take your prayers as seriously as you take them.

Good list to work through as you think about your personal prayer life with the God. I needed to hear these today. Hope they will help you too. — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK.

Fear is a Fearsome Thing

Fear is a Fearsome Thing

Man was not created to fear. When he was made God placed him in a garden and hedged him in so that nothing could hurt him. Each day, in the cool of the day, God visited him so that he need not fear even in the darkness that ended the day.

It was sin that caused Adam to fear. He confessed to having sinned when he told God he was afraid. (Gen 3:10) How could Adam fear a God who so lovingly cared for him? Each morning he awoke to Gods provision. It was God who loved and cared for man. How did God become someone to be feared?

Have we not found it so? When we want our own way and we know it is a better way then we feel that we are unworthy of His fellowship. Do you recall how Jesus told a story of the “workers in the vineyard? He said that at the beginning the owner was such a generous man that he contracted with the workers to pay them a good amount for their labor.

Each time he hired new workers he asked them to trust him to pay them well. Even the ones he hired just before sunset were asked to trust him to do right by them. When he instructed the paymaster to pay the workers he started with those hired last. Every one saw the master as a generous employer since he paid each the same amount.

When those who had worked all day for the generous pay that they were promised, he kept his word. He did not renege on his agreement. It was because he was generous that he became bad in the eyes of those who had worked all day. The others still saw him as generous. God’s great mercy is often seen as “unfair”.

Now Adam and Eve were not content to accept all of God’s blessings. Somehow they wanted what they were forbidden to have. How many trees did God plant in the garden? Maybe seven. Was one tree kept for God too much to give to one who has given man so much. Perhaps there were 10 trees, Is a tithe too much to give up to God?

Fear entered Adam and Eve’s hearts because of what they had done to God’s grace. Jesus said that in the last days, “Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken” (Luke 21: 26) We are left to our own fears when we try to look into the future.

We cannot know the future for we cannot control the future. Only God knows the future. If we can trust Him then we will have no fear for we know His heart. People today fear the future for the uncertainty that surrounds them. “The Market” is down and prices are up and employment is rising and riches are falling. Perhaps even Social Security will someday be unavailable. We may need to pray for our DAILY BREAD with no hope of tomorrow’s bread.

If we are a part of His flock then we need not fear. Jesus said, “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” The Greek word little is micro. Such a tiny flock! Perhaps it will be so small as to be forgotten by God, or easily overcome by an enemy. Not so! Our Lord has said that we are the center of God’s great plan.

When you feel alone and insignificant remember, God is still on the throne. He can never be defeated. The resurrection is proof that He can never fail. We may fail Him but He will never fail us. When we struggle and fail and our own strength is almost gone remember His is not diminished at all.

The Poet’s Thoughts
It is not the size of you faith
Nor the strength of you puny hand
But the might of the One who holds you
And His own unchanging plan.

It is not the weariness of your struggle
In the battle against your addiction
But the faithfulness of His promise
To aid you in your affliction.

The one who walks beside you
So that you will never be alone
Will give you the bread of life
Instead of one made of stone.

Remember how He sought Adam
When he and Eve were in hiding
He will not ever let go of you
In His shadow you will be abiding

In the darkness that seems to surround us
So that fear is all we may feel
His mighty arm will hold us
For His Love is so very real.

God’s WORD for YOU: Proverbs 4; Genesis 10-12; Matthew 4

Great Quote: Grant me, O Lord, to know what I ought to know,to love what I ought to love, to praise what delights Thee most, to value what is precious in Thy sight, to hate what is offensive to Thee. Do not suffer me to judge according to the sight of my eyes, nor to pass sentence according to the hearing of the ears of ignorant men; but to discern with a true judgment between things visible and spiritual, and above all, always to inquire what is the good pleasure of Thy will. What the IRS Has Taught Us

What the IRS Has Taught Us
(Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days.”)

Here are some thoughts about life and life’s lessons.

Have you ever considered how many ticks on the clock make up a year? In one day we have 86,400 seconds. In one year we have 31million, 536 thousand ticks on the clock.

So what is the lesson that the IRS teaches? Only one tick makes a difference. Only one in 31,536,000. But that one tick makes all of the difference. It, of course, happens every year at midnight, December 31st.

What ever gifts we want to give for that year must be made before that date. After that tick on the clock it is in a new year, everything you want to do in 2008 must be done before that tick, after that it is too late.

There are many times in a person’s life that one tick makes the difference. A driver’s license, for instance, one can not legally drive until that tick on the clock that marks his birth. The certificate issued at death ends the contractual relationship at the bank.

Even conception can be calculated when the one sperm and egg unite. There is only one egg but many sperm. Only one sperm survives to produce an offspring. Of the many ticks on the clock only one makes a difference.

If we only knew which tick of the clock will make the difference between heaven and hell. I heard a story of a young man who asked his Rabbi, “When should I get right with God?”
“Oh, about five minutes before you die.” was the reply. “Good,” said the young man as he cheerfully left the Rabbi to “paint the town”. He suddenly stopped and asked, “When will that be?” “We don’t know” was the reply.

The Psalmist said, “Teach us to number our days.” He did not say to count them. The number of the day depends on where the digit is placed between the first number and the last.

Do you know today’s number? Since you cannot know it, what can you do about it? Here is a hint. “Today is the first day of the rest of your life!”

If you have not come to our Lord Jesus Christ and completed the Wedding moment make this the day. Over 2000 years ago Jesus stretched out His arms upon a cross and said (in effect) I, Jesus, take you,________, to be my wedded wife now He is waiting to hear you say, “I take you Jesus to be my Savior, husband, and Lord. We call this salvation. Perhaps you have done
that already.

What is the number of today? If you know Jesus Christ as your savior, this can still be your first day. The first day of VICTORY. It can be the day that you rise up from the last fall and claim the Victory purchased for you after Satan’s final defeat. (1 Cor. 15:17) When Christ arose from the dead He gave death its fatal blow. “If we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves,” wrote John (1John 1:9), “But if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and wash away all unrighteousness.”

Why did John claim the justice of God and not the mercy of God? Charles Wesley explained it in these words, “Payment He will not twice demand, first at my surety’s hand (Jesus) and then again at mine.” Rejoice in His faithfulness and not your failures!

Make this day number one on your Victory calendar. Walk in Victory! — Dr. George VanSandt is a Christian counselor/Pastor and friend of America’s KESWICK. He was Bill Welte’s Pastor growing up.

God’s WORD for YOU: Proverbs 3; Genesis 7-9; Matthew 3

Great Quote: The Christian is the person who sees every time and every situation, however dreary and repetitive, as God sees it – a fresh creation from his hand, demanding its own response in perhaps a wholly new and creative way. Under God he is free over it. He has won through to a purchase over events; he has risen with Christ. Evelyn Underhill

Staying on Track

Staying on Track

This Christmas I decided to put up my trains for the grand kids. (I think that it was also something that our big kids enjoyed, especially our sons, Josh and Zach …)

In playing with the trains, I was reminded again as to how easy it is for the trains to fall off the tracks. The slightest bump or misalignment of the track can cause a major train wreck.

Life is like that as well. Staying on track can be difficult for some of us. The slightest bump or misalignment of life can easily become a distraction that gets us going in the wrong direction or off track, and before you know it, we have a major wreck.

I read these verses the other day from Proverbs: “I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, and when you run, you will not stumble. Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn away from it and pass on. Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or left; remove your feet from evil.” (Proverbs 4:11-12, 14-15, 25-27)

Look carefully at the instruction:

Do not enter the path of the wicked
Do not walk in the way of evil
Avoid it
Don’t travel on it,
Turn away from it
Look straight ahead
Ponder your path
Take the established path
Don’t turn to the right or left
Remove your feet from evil

If you are looking for some fancy outline — forget it. It can’t get any plainer than this. If I am going to stay on track — I have no business deviating from path. I need to be in that place where I don’t even enter into negotiation with even the slightest thought of deviating from the path.

I must choose to stay on track. Here’s two promises to hang your hat on:

“The Lord will deliver me (you) from EVERY evil work and preserve me (you) for HIS heavenly kingdom. To HIM be glory forever and ever. Amen! — 2 Timothy 4:18

“Now unto HIM who is able to keep you (me) from stumbling and to present you (me) faultless before the presence of HIS glory WITH EXCEEDING JOY, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. — Jude 24-25

By God’s grace I want to stay on track and be the man that God wants me to be in 2009. How about you, brother? — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

Thus Far

“Thus far the Lord has helped us.” 1 Samuel 7:12

Yesterday morning I was awake early in the morning with some very heavy burdens on my heart. I wasn’t necessarily wrestless, but my heart was heavy and it made it hard to sleep.

I shared the burden with the Lord and went back to sleep. When I woke up to have my quiet time, I opened the daily devotional reading from Daily Light and read two verses that jumped off the page: “Cast your burden on the Lord and HE will sustain you; and He will never allow the righteous to be shaken” (Psalm 55:22) and “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

Now those verses spoke to my heart in an amazing way — a reminder that God KNEW about my situation. I turned to the next devotional book and as I opened the pages to the date, the verse on the page was “Thus far the Lord has helped us!”

But the amazing thing was that the Holy Spirit prompted me to read one more devotional. As I opened the pages to the date, I was amazed, and started to laugh — “Oh God — I think you are trying to tell me something!” The verse for the day? “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

For 30 minutes I rehearsed the many ways that the Lord has helped us this year. My heart was overflowing with praise and expectancy. How will God help us through this current situation we are facing? I don’t know the HOW, but I do know that WHEN He helps us, it will be in HIS time, in HIS way, and for HIS glory.

What are you facing? Be reminded of the truth — the Lord IS our helper in the day of trouble. With His help, I want to remember that on day one of 2009. On behalf of the Board and staff of America’s KESWICK, HAPPY NEW YEAR. — Bill Welte is the President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

A Benediction of Hope

A Benediction of Hope

Today’s devotional closes out this year of Freedom Fighters, and comes from our daily devotional, “REAL VICTORY FOR REAL LIFE”. It was written by Pastor Bill Raws, my mentor, friend, and adopted Dad. We will miss him at this year’s New Year’s Eve services.
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

At the conclusion of a year and on the threshold of a new year we tend to examine our past experiences and anticipate possible improvement in our performance and circumstances. We set goals and make resolutions designed to correct past failures and direct future actions. When the resolutions are broken and the goals seem to be elusive, a sense of hopelessness develops and we resign ourselves to failure. We attribute the failures to circumstances over which we have little or no control. A pervading sense of our inability produces a frustration and hopelessness.

What’s our problem? Certainly many of the goals and purposes may be good and godly, but in ourselves we lack the ability to carry them through. The answer must be found aside from ourselves.

After presenting a treatise on the gospel of salvation – past, present and future – the Apostle Paul concludes the book of Romans with some highly practical applications. At the end of a discourse on Christian liberty he inserts a timely benediction in the words of our theme verse, Romans 15:13. It centers on hope and consists of four factors which counteract our hopelessness.

First, he points to the source of hope – “the God of hope.” When His ability is substituted for our inability, there is hope and victory. The word implies no uncertainty. One of God’s characteristics is hope, and it is His kind of hope that He communicates to the believer.

Second, he presents the resource flowing from His hope – “fill you with joy and peace.” Joy relates to our delight in anticipation of seeing our hopes fulfilled. Peace results from the assurance that God will fulfill the hopes that He generates in us.

Third, we are directed to the course which must be followed if this hope is to be realized. It is presented as a requirement – “in believing.” God’s infusion of hope cannot be realized apart from constant faith. Continued faith yields a reward – “that you may abound in hope.” God does not give sparingly; He provides and overflowing reservoir of hope.

Fourth and finally, he describes the force which makes this hope possible – “by the power of the Holy Spirit.” It is not our strength which results in hope; it is the Spirit’s power. The prophet Zechariah was facing situations which could have been considered hopeless, but the angel of the Lord had a word for Him (and us) – “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.’ Says the Lord of hosts.” Let’s allow the all-powerful Holy Spirit to produce hope in our hearts as we step into the new year. — Rev. William A. Raws

On behalf of the Board and staff of America’s KESWICK — Happy New Year!

God’s WORD for YOU: Proverbs 31; Malachi; Revelation 22

Great Quote: Christians who are no longer sure that God loves and accepts them in Jesus, apart from their present spiritual achievements, are subconsciously radically insecure persons—much less secure than non-Christians, because they have too much light to rest easily under the constant bulletins they receive from their Christian environment about the holiness of God and the righteousness they are supposed to have. Their insecurity shows itself in pride, a fierce defensive assertion of their own righteousness and defensive criticism of others…They cling desperately to legal, pharisaical righteousness, but envy, jealousy and other branches on the tree of sin grow out of their fundamental insecurity…it is often necessary to convince sinners (even sinful Christians) of the grace and love of God toward them, before we can get them to look at their problems. Then the vision of grace and the sense of God’s forgiving acceptance may actually cure most of the problems. This may account for Paul’s frequent fusing of justification and sanctification. — Richard Lovelace. Dynamics of Spiritual Life

The Decline of Godly Leadership (Part 2)

The Decline of Godly Leadership (Part 2)

Yesterday I shared two points from an article written by the late Dr. A. W. Tozer’s new biography, “A PASSION FOR GOD — THE SPIRITUAL JOURNEY OF A.W. TOZER.

The third point is that the Christian world needs leaders that are UNCOMPROMISING. Listen to his poignant words:

“The need today is for leaders identified so fully with the cross-carry Jesus that they have no life apart from Him, no ambition except to make Him appear glorious in the sight of men. Such as these will seek no place, no reputation. Christ Himself will be their glory and all.

He is a poor and wretched example of a Christian who will accept a seat at a banquet where His Lord is not welcome, who will bask in the sunshine of a friendship which His Lord cannot share. The true servant will ask nothing better than to be where Jesus is, to stand or fall with Him in the favor of men, to suffer or to rejoice with Him at all times.

At times like this every real Christian must make his decision, whether he will drift along with the religious times, weakly going wherever the noisy promoters take him, or whether he shall stand to resist the movements which tend away from the sound and solid teachings of spiritual religion.

The Christian with spiritual vision and courage to follow it will not take long to hesitate which course to take. He will set his house in order and prepare to bear his cross along with his Savior.”

My prayer in 2009 is that I will be a leader in every area of my life that is uncompromising. Will you pray with me to that end? I’ll do the same for you. — Bill Welte is President and CEO of America’s KESWICK

Great Quote: As to the importance of the children of God opening their hearts to each other, especially when they are getting in a cold state, or are under the power of a certain sin, or are in especial difficulty; I know from my own experience how often the snare of the devil has been broken when under the power of sin; how often the heart has been comforted when nigh to be overwhelmed; how often advice, and great perplexity, has been
obtained, – by opening my heart to a brother in whom I had confidence. We are children of the same family, and ought therefore to be helpers one of another. — George Muller
