And Another Thing

…and Another Thing

“So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us.” Acts 15:8

I can still hear the haunting cries of family and friends who would bombard me with the failures of my life when I was in bondage to a life dominating sin, “and another thing”.

AndAnotherThing

On top of the guilt and shame would come the reminders of the damaged I caused and the unmet expectations of my failed promises to change.

Upon Receiving Christ as my Savior I was able to begin to hear His voice,” Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” Matthew 11:28, 29.

Luke’s account in Acts 15 is an attempt by “a certain man” who said “…and another thing” which was combated by Peter in vs. 10 “Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

I entered the Colony of Mercy and the journey began as God would bring one thing at a time to deal with and I was able to sort through and eliminate the things that were too heavy for me to carry. These “heavy burdens” where never meant for me to carry nor could I in my own strength.

Even today that “certain man” can rear his ugly head. Do you have a “certain man” whispering in your ear, “…and another thing”? My advice,

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33 – Rob Russomano is a graduate of the Colony of Mercy and serves on the full-time staff at America’s Keswick

Spirit-Filled Craftsmen

Spirit-Filled Craftsmen

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. (1 Corinthians 12: 4-6 NLT)

How many people do you know who feel they have nothing special, no gift, they can offer the Lord?

Think Victory_2 EDIT

In Exodus 31: 1-6 there is a description of the special people, gifted of God and filled with the Spirit, who did “menial” tasks in the building of the tabernacle. In 1 Peter 4: 10a (NLT) we’re told, God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Specifically mentioned is the gift of helps.

Helps? That doesn’t sound very spiritual ! But preaching… or teaching… or worship leading… or singing, playing an instrument… or being involved in drama… or administration (heading a ministry of the church)… or ???? They’re great. No, we’re talking about helps!

If the English language means anything at all, those verses mean that people who do regular things, not just “ministry” things, have a spiritual gift from God. That means you can minister with your talent.

How I thank God for people who have the gift of helps. Where would our churches and para-church ministries be today if we didn’t have volunteers who love to serve Jesus with their abilities, talents, gifts?

In my experience I have seen people who have built buildings, worked full-time in food service, repaired all manner of electrical products, re-wired an entire camp, kept major large pieces of equipment running, headed a volunteer organization, etc., etc., etc., all as volunteers.

You have heard, “time is money.” Think of the money saved by Christian ministries because of the volunteerism they have experienced. But perhaps of even greater value is the spiritual fulfillment of the volunteer who fully realizes that he/ she has used the gift God gave to honor Him and further His cause.

Some say that 80% of the ministry is perpetuated by 20% of the people. Let’s change those statistics and get involved.

What is it that you can do? Which church or Christian ministry can you serve? God has placed something inside of you that you do well. Do it for Jesus. If you have never known the joy of serving, why not begin now?

A volunteer for Jesus, a soldier true.
Others have enlisted, why not you?
Jesus is the captain, we will never fear.
Will you be enlisted as a volunteer.

Judas or Jesus

Judas or Jesus

As I was installing carpet in the Raws building today, a verse of scripture came to mind and a whole series of thoughts and questions began to run through my head.

Judas or Jesus

It was the evening before Jesus crucifixion and the Twelve were gathered around the table breaking bread with Jesus. At some point, Jesus said, “one of you will betray Me.” They were astonished and grieved and yet each one had to ask Jesus, “is it I Lord?”

Is it I? Are you kidding me? Think about this for a minute. Twelve men who had been with Jesus for three years, had sat at His feet and heard His teachings, had heard the voice of God in the flesh, had looked right into His eyes!! And yet not one of them could say with 100% certainty in his heart that he was absolutely not the one who would betray Jesus. How can that be?!?! And even worse—what about me? How do I know I won’t betray Him?

The answer is, I will betray Him. And more than once.

Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV)  The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

I am a sinner saved by grace—but I will turn my back on my Savior at times.  Twelve men who had the most intimate relationship any man on earth has ever had with Jesus and not one of them could be sure he was not the weak link—the “sinner” who would turn traitor to the living God.

Mark 9:24  “Yes I believe, help my unbelief.”

How is it I become “the traitor”? For me, it’s not that I ever stop believing that Jesus is Lord and all powerful God. It’s when I question if He is really going to do things when I want and how I want. I stop waiting on the Lord and take matters into my own hands, I stop believing His plan is better—I become a traitor—just like Judas. And, sadly, I usually pay a price for not exercising my faith the way I should.

By Gods grace and through Christ’s blood, I am forgiven.

Lord, forgive me when I take matters into my own hands and become a Judas—help my unbelief.  Amen – Steve Schmidt is a regular Freedom Fighter Blogger, a graduate of the Colony of Mercy and served full-time at America’s Keswick

Impulsiveness or Discipleship

Impulsiveness or Discipleship

“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith.” Jude 20

Welcome brothers, to a new week of Freedom Fighters. Over the years I have used the daily devotional “My Utmost for His Highest” by Oswald Chambers. I have had a love-hate relationship with Mr. Chambers.

Love-Hate? Some days I sail along and say “Amen!” But there are many days I go “OUCH!” I had that happen last week so I wanted to share with you the reading from October 21. It was very powerful and timely:

ChambersBookOrange

There was nothing of the nature of impulsive or thoughtless action about our Lord, but only a calm strength that never got into a panic. Most of us develop our Christianity along the lines of our own nature, not along the lines of God’s nature. Impulsiveness is a trait of the natural life, and our Lord always ignores it, because it hinders the development of the life of a disciple.

Watch how the Spirit of God gives a sense of restraint to impulsiveness, suddenly bringing us a feeling of self-conscious foolishness, which makes us instantly want to vindicate ourselves. Impulsiveness is all right in a child, but is disastrous in a man or woman—an impulsive adult is always a spoiled person. Impulsiveness needs to be trained into intuition through discipline.

Discipleship is built entirely on the supernatural grace of God. Walking on water is easy to someone with impulsive boldness, but walking on dry land as a disciple of Jesus Christ is something altogether different. Peter walked on the water to go to Jesus, but he “followed Him at a distance” on dry land (Mark 14:54).

We do not need the grace of God to withstand crises—human nature and pride are sufficient for us to face the stress and strain magnificently. But it does require the supernatural grace of God to live twenty-four hours of every day as a saint, going through drudgery, and living an ordinary, unnoticed, and ignored existence as a disciple of Jesus. It is ingrained in us that we have to do exceptional things for God—but we do not.

We have to be exceptional in the ordinary things of life, and holy on the ordinary streets, among ordinary people—and this is not learned in five minutes.

Chambers, Oswald (2010-10-22). My Utmost for His Highest, Updated Edition (Kindle Locations 6721-6736). Discovery House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

The question I asked myself on October 21st was what were the ways that I was impulsive? Am I a “spoiled person” or a disciple? Well how about you? How would you answer those questions?

All This Over Dirty Hands

All This Over Their Dirty Hands

“And the Pharisees and the Scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” And He said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”  Mark 7:5-8 (ESV)

Dirty Hands

So the story start’s like this…”The Pharisees, along with some religion scholars who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around Him. They noticed that some of His disciples weren’t being careful with ritual washings before meals. The Pharisees—Jews in general, in fact—would never eat a meal without going through the motions of a ritual hand-washing, with an especially vigorous scrubbing if they had just come from the market (to say nothing of the scouring’s they’d give jugs and pots and pans).”(Mark 7:1-4 MSG)

My question would have been, “What do you have against the jugs, pots and pans?” But that is not what happened next. The Pharisees go up to Jesus and in a roundabout way ask why His disciples eat with dirty hands. And Jesus replies to them in the words of Isaiah the prophet by repeating what was written in 29:13 of Isaiah’s book…“And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, while their hearts are far from Me, and their fear of Me is a commandment taught by men” If we take a look at this from the perspective of Isaiah 29:9-14 we can see why this was easy for Jesus to say.

“Astonish yourselves and be astonished; blind yourselves and be blind! Be drunk, but not with wine; stagger, but not with strong drink! “The first thing to note here is the kingship the people are under (at the time Isaiah wrote this) which would be Hezekiah. Unlike the king before him, Ahaz, who allowed the people of Judah to fall into apostasy, Hezekiah himself sought The Lord. But because the high places still existed the people under his reign only honored God in an outward sense, there was no true repentance among them. And in an ironic fashion Isaiah commands them to continue on in this way.

They, because of their spiritual drunkenness, are put into a spiritual deep sleep (vv10) and because of this they can’t hear the words of a real prophet. To continue with Isaiah’s irony he says those who are educated and are leaders can’t open the sealed Book (vv11) and for those who can’t read, the Book is opened but they can’t read it (vv12). We know that God will not be mocked and in verse 13 His Word calls this one right down the middle. King Hezekiah may, himself, have been devoted and wanted to bring about reform for these people but their idolatry had not been totally abolished and it made it easy for the heart of the people to lean towards old habits.

Because of their wisdom was being taught by the divine inspiration of themselves God says in verse 14, “behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.” This brings us back to the Pharisees with Jesus…over His disciple’s dirty hands. Isn’t it the cleansing of the heart that was important to Him? But yet the men of tradition couldn’t get past the obstacle of “ritual hand-washing” to see what Jesus came to do. And what was that? To open the Book, pronounce it and to awaken the people from their spiritual deep sleep. Apologetics 101

Apologetics 101

Every day we run into people that either don’t know the Gospel or have reasons they choose not to believe it. It’s not always easy, in fact, it’s usually pretty hard to find a way to break through the hard shell of “spiritual resistance” and begin some dialogue concerning the Bible.

apologetics

I have found that, showing people the “trail” from everyday sayings and sights back to their origin in the scriptures helps to at least peak their curiosity and open some deeper dialogue.

“He couldn’t see (read) the writing on the wall”.  We’ve all heard this saying before but who has stopped to think, “where did that come from”?  Daniel 5:5  When the hand of God wrote a message to Nebuchadnezzar “on the wall”—the writing on the wall—around 600B.C. When you take someone back and show them this is actually a biblical “saying”, they will be quite surprised.

“Go the extra mile”.  We hear this all the time, to go the extra mile, especially in sports. People in business are always encouraged to go the extra mile—but where did it come from?  Matthew 5:41 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. When a Roman soldier was passing through a town, it was a law that he could hand off his gear to any citizen and they were required to carry it a mile for him. Jesus said, “Go 2 miles”—the extra mile. Jesus wants us to go above and beyond so others will “see” the difference and we will be able to give a testimony as to why we live to a higher standard. “Go the extra mile”.

The Rod of Asclepius also known as the asklepian, is a serpent-entwined rod wielded by the Greek god Asclepius, a deity associated with healing and medicine. The symbol has continued to be used in modern times, where it is associated with medicine and health care—lapel pins, on ambulances, on hospitals…  Turn to Numbers 21:5-9  This is where Moses was instructed by God to put a brass serpent on a stick for the people to look at and be healed from the bites of serpents sent as a judgment by God. This took place during the Exodus, around 1447 B.C.—long before it showed up in Greek mythology.

I  hope this blesses and encourages you to dig deeper into Gods word and toward apologetics as a tool to greater witnessing for our Lord. – Steve Schmidt is a graduate of the Colony of Mercy and is a regular Freedom Fighter blogger

Pursuing Our Destiny, Part 18–The Discipline of Prayer

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (Colossians 4:2, ESV)

Preparing this particular Freedom Fighter has created significant frustration.  In researching for this article, I’ve found a lot of trite, light, and almost useless material.  Even what I’ve read from writers for whom I have respect, not much that I’ve found on this spiritual practice has proved helpful.  And, if it’s not helpful to me, I’m not inclined to share it with those who read FF.

Prayer 3

So, what to do!  I’m going to share some very practical verses of Scripture that speak to the issue and then make one or two closing comments.

Here is what Scripture says:

1.  We are to pray with faith: And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have  faith.

(Matthew 21:22, ESV)

2.  We are to pray according to God’s will: And this is the confidence that we have towards him,

that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us in

whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. (1 John

5:14&15, ESV)

3.  We are to pray in the Holy Spirit: But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy

faith and praying in the Holy Spirit. . . . (Jude 20, ESV)

4.  We are to pray constantly: Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

Romans 12:12, ESV)

5.  We are to pray with thanksgiving: Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with

     thanksgiving. (Colossians 4:2)

While more references speak to the issue, I think these are enough to spark our thinking and our practice of prayer.  I’m not nearly as concerned with a formula for prayer or some of the acrostics that teach us the kinds of prayer as I am with each of us just choosing to pray.

Most of us enter into conversations every day.  We talk about work, family, sports, politics, etc.  Prayer becomes easier when we realize it is conversation  Dallas Willard makes it really simple when  he writes, “Prayer is conversing, communicating with God.”

Don’t worry about the technicalities, just talk to God!  Tell Him what is on your mind.  Share your burdens with Him.  Ask Him for direction and wisdom within the guidelines listed above.  Let’s not forget, though, that this practice is a conversation.  Once we’ve talked, we allow God to talk—through the Scriptures and through the Holy Spirit as we sit quietly and listen for that “still small voice.”

I want to say more about prayer next week, but for now, one simple question will suffice: Will we choose to begin a conversation with God this week? – Pastor John Strain is a weekly Freedom Fighter blogger and is available for pulpit supply

Ingredients

Ingredients

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise.”  Ephesians 5:15

I’ve been doing a lot of cooking lately and I’m finding out the importance of following the instructions to certain recipes.

Sure I can throw a steak or some chicken on the grill but when it comes down to preparing a meal I’m enjoying the “fruit” of following the proper ingredients.

IngredientsIngredients

In Ephesians 5:1-18, Paul is warning us to use ingredients to be wise. Unlike most recipes he is telling us what “not” to add. That’s the trouble I have when preparing a meal, I see the list of ingredients but have the tendency to substitute instead.

I find that unless I know what not to do it make doing what I’m supposed to do easier. God’s word often speaks to me in that way, “Be wise, not unwise” or “walk not in the counsel of the ungodly” (Psalm 1:1).

In the second part of the chapter we’re told how to prepare the meal. Most importantly in verse 20 “giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

So if you have prepared a meal and there is a funny taste to it maybe you should check what you’re putting or not putting in. A good reminder as we realize the importance of being balanced. We have the ability to control the ingredients of our actions, when the flavor is too much or if we’re not enough to taste of the Spirit of God maybe we need to check the ingredients. I’m sure if the proper measure of God’s grace is present the right flavor will be easily attainable.

Oh taste and see that the Lord is good.
Blessed is the man that trusts in Him.

Confession

CONFESSION

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power as it is working. James 5:16

I have learned so much from hanging around with the men of the Colony of Mercy during the past 17 years. I love that they are transparent and real – not afraid to take off their masks. Yes, they have blown it big time and that is why they have ended up in our 120-day program. But when they are able to finally get REAL – it is amazing.

One of the things I have learned is that they are much more willing to come clean and confess their sins to each other. They have lived in hiding so long that they really want to be totally clean.

Confession

Author-speaker Dr. Stephen Atterburn says that “confession is not a one-time thing. It’s a lifestyle and spiritual discipline for God’s man.” While there is certainly something very healing about confessing our faults to one another when it is safe (James 5:16), confessing our sin to God is even more important.

Atterburn suggests two kinds of lives:

A life of  …

Pride
Secrecy
Self-deception
Independence
No accountability
Pretending
Sabotaging relationships
Cutting off God’s power
Creating distances from people
Physical illness
Resentment
Insecurity

This is the life of SECRECY!

A life of …

Humility
Openness
Honesty
Unleashing God’s power
Interdependence
Accountability
Authenticity
Strengthened relationships
Creating closeness
Better health
Joy
Security in God’s will

This is a life of CONFESSION!  (adapted from Every Man, God’s Man, pages 158-59

I sat with a young man this past week who shared the deepest part of his life with me. Over the course of the next couple of days you could see a HUGE difference in his life because he was able to get REAL. 1 John 1:9 reminds us that “if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
So how about it? Is it time for you to get real with another brother, or maybe more importantly, God Himself?

The Glory of God

The Glory of God

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. (Ephesians 1: 3-6)

Jonathan Edwards, that prince of preachers from New England, once described God’s glory as “the end for which God created the world.”   Author and preacher John Piper, in describing worship, suggested it is “to behold and display His glory for the enjoyment of His redeemed people from every person, language,   and nation.”   The glory of God is a subject that is overwhelming.

Think Victory_2 EDIT                     I

In Ephesians 1, the apostle Paul is addressing the glory of God as he teaches the Ephesians that God chose us and predestined us for His glory (v. 5).   God created people for His glory (v. 6).   We are called to be the exhibits of His glory (v. 6).   Just as Paul the apostle   reminded the Ephesians about the glory of God, we are to be reminded that we are on the earth to bring honor and glory to God.

The obvious question then needs to be, “What does it mean to bring glory to God?”   Does it mean that we are in some way   to increase Him?     It would be beyond imagination to think that we can somehow make God more than who He is.   Perhaps a good way to understand this proposition would be to recognize that we are to display His glory, not increase His glory.   For how can we increase the greatness and majesty of God?   We are unable to do it.

The issue then becomes the need to increase His glory which is already available to all of us.   The psalmist proclaims, The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork (Psalm 19: 1).   As we look to the universe and recognize the majesty of God, we are reminded of the words of theologian R.C. Sproul, “Men are never duly touched and impressed with a conviction of their insignificance, until they have contrasted themselves with the majesty of God.”   This is where God’s glory is best seen.

When Jesus wanted to provide an illustration about worship, He did not choose a person who would appear to be one of the greatest intellects nor a person of high moral standing.   Rather He chose a woman who previously had five husbands and was living with a man who was not her husband.   They began to discuss worship and the topic became one of location of worship.   This woman, known simply as the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4), desired to know why her people worshipped on Mt. Gerizim and the Jews worshipped in Jerusalem.   Jesus quickly changed the tone of the conversation and said …They that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeks such to worship Him (John 4: 23, 24).   Powerful words from the One we are to glorify!   This woman then went and told the people in her village that she, a woman with a deplorable past, had found the Messiah!

It is the purpose of each Christian to understand that we are on the earth to make Him known. The glory of God is best seen through lives that have been changed by the One who is to be glorified.   Take time today and consider the importance of making much of Jesus through your life.   We need to be the Jesus they see.

Spend some time today thinking through various ways Jesus can be known through your life.   God is pleased with this as it brings glory to Him. Dr. Dino Pedrone is the President of Davis College and a speaker at America’s Keswick
