Mentoring is Worth It

Mentoring is Worth It

I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth. 3 John 4

I heard it again this week in a message shared by one of my mentors, Dr. Bill Schmidt, our speaker for our Young at Heart conference. Mentoring is worth it.

One of the greatest opportunities before us is to have the opportunity to mentor the men and women who are now part of the Millennial generation (born after 1980).

This generation wants to be mentored and taught in all areas of life. They are unlike my generation (Boomers) who didn’t need answers or anyone else’s opinion. We were going to do it our way.

Millennials want to be mentored and you and I have the opportunity in investing in a life. It is an investment that will be rich dividends if you are willing to take the risk.

On Saturday night I took 100 guests from America’s Keswick to a phenomenal Christmas program at Trinity Assembly of God. The church music ministry is directed by my dear friend, Pastor Brian Biondo – an incredibly gifted and anointed worship leader.

brian biondo

He was a young man who worked for me when I was Vice-President of Ministries at Sandy Cove. He was a bright, energetic kid who was eager to learn the ropes of ministry. Full of questions. Intrigued by the in’s and out’s of ministry.

I can remember nights long after the service when I had just crawled in bed and there would be a knock on the door. It was Brian with a hot soft pretzel wanting to say goodnight and ask a few questions and to check on me.

At age 22, he became the worship pastor of Trinity Assembly of God and the rest is history. I sat on the front row of this huge sanctuary watching Brian direct a 20 piece orchestra and large choir, and watching one of the most amazing Christmas productions (The Splendor of Christmas) that could easily be on Broadway.

I sat there as proud of him as if he were my own son (and I am very proud of my four sons). My heart bubbled over with praise and gratitude to the Lord for giving me the privilege of investing a small part in Brian’s life.

Don’t miss the opportunity. Is there someone in your life right now that you could mentor? It is worth it, brothers! – Bill Welte is President/CEO of America’s Keswick.

A Prayer About A Standing Shepherd

A Prayer About A Standing Shepherd

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” . . . He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be our peace. (Mic. 5:2, 4–5 NIV)

It is hard to believe that we are closing another week of Freedom Fighter blogs. I trust you have been encouraged in your walk with the Lord. We close out the week with another gospel prayer from the pen of Pastor Scotty Smith:

Most loving Jesus, there are so many reasons to love and worship you. First and foremost, you are God, who, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is singularly worthy to be worshiped with everything we have and are. The fact that I’m even tempted to worship other gods is irrefutable confirmation that I’m a broken, sinful man, desperate for the salvation that you alone can give.

shepherd

Today I’m especially moved to worship you, Jesus, for being the Shepherd-Savior that you are. Having laid down your life as the Lamb of God, you’ve risen and are now the standing shepherd—relentlessly caring, vigilantly protecting, and faithfully providing for us. You never sleep or slumber. You are constantly caring for us. Be praised and worshiped, O good and engaged Shepherd.

Jesus, because of your great love for me in the gospel, I lack nothing that I need. I don’t get all my wants, but I do have everything I need for life and godliness . . . and a whole lot more. I praise you that it’s green pastures and quiet waters to which you lead me—all for the restoring of my tired, weary, broken, rebellious soul.

For your glory and my good, you guide me along paths of righteousness, goodness, truth, and grace. And even as that journey involves traversing places marked by decay and death, you are with me, and that’s all I really need to know. I don’t have to be afraid of anything or anyone, for you are with me.

You nourish me all the time, even when enemies are close by and threatening. Your generous anointing overflows for the blessing of others. To follow you is to be followed by the fragrance of your goodness and love. Even in the new heaven and new earth, you will be our shepherd, leading us to springs of living water (Rev. 7:17). Your greatness, Jesus, will reach to the ends of the earth, and we will always live securely, for you are our peace, now and forever. In your great and gracious name we pray. Amen.

Feelings are Not Facts

Feelings Are Not Facts

Dear Jesus,

Lately it has occurred to me that not all of my sins were forgiven at Calvary.  I feel as if You may have left a couple of mine out when You were on the cross.  I’m thinking about many but here’s one: I don’t feel as if I have been totally forgiven for abandoning my children all those years when I was drinking and drugging.  I neglected my responsibilities as their father and now my middle one is having his own battle with drugs and alcohol and thoughts of suicide.  I feel as if I need to do something, to work harder, to prove that I really am sorry for what I did.  There has to be a way for me to feel as if I didn’t fail.

So, can You do me a favor and come back and repeat that day?  I know it was the worst day of Your life on earth but can You leave Heaven again and make sure that my sin was forgiven?  I just don’t feel as if it was.  Can You go to the Cross one more time?  Thanks.

Your child,

Joe

FeelingsAreNotFacts (1)

Dear Joe,

No, I won’t be doing that day again, not because I don’t love you or that I don’t care that you are suffering this emotional anguish but because My crucifixion really did conquer ALL sin and death forever, past, present, and future.  My sitting on the throne at the right hand of My Father is proof that when I said, “It is finished,” it is.

It is true that there is nothing you can do.  I did it all, I paid the price, My death reconciled you to My Father.  When you asked Me into your life to become your Lord and Savior, all that you have done, are doing, and will do has been atoned for.  You received a new past, a beautiful present, and a glorious future.  Though you may not feel it, remember that feelings are not facts.  It was only through the love of My Father that you are truly forgiven.  One and done.  You need to accept your acceptance, and your acceptance is based on what I did at the Cross.  You could never do anything that would duplicate what happened that day.  So you may regret the path you took to get to Me, and I know that if you could change what you did, especially abandoning your children, you would.  My death, burial, and resurrection have taken care of ALL your sins.

Check out John 3:3, John 3:16-17, John 5:24, and II Cor. 5:17.  These verses will help you in the areas of your salvation, assurance, and security.  II Cor. 5:21 will help you to know that through My death, burial, and resurrection, you are accepted 100%.

I love you,

Jesus

Busyness About Our Business

Busyness About Our Business

I don’t know about you, but I find myself running from activity to activity – day after day!  Whether it is work, family, church, social events, etc… it doesn’t really matter, they can be very noble things that fill our time, distracting us!

Christmas is a terrific season of the year.  Celebrations, family gatherings, parties, shopping, decorating, travel.  All can be great blessings, but I want to purpose in my heart this season to strive for balance and remember who and what is truly important.  Christmas would just be a holiday if Christ hadn’t come to redeem us from sin and establish a relationship with us.

busyness

In the book of Luke, we read about a gentleman named Simeon.  He was a righteous man, filled with the Holy Spirit – that is basically the extent of our knowledge of who he was as a man.  We do know that he expected the Messiah to come and redeem Israel.  We also know that the Holy Spirit promised Simeon he would see Jesus before he died.  (Luke 2:25 – 35) Simeon did have the privilege of holding the Savior and recognized the significance of this child and His birth.

I appreciate Simeon’s response and find it to be a great challenge for myself to remember at this time of year; Simeon immediately praised God for the gift of His Son, Jesus!  He was grateful!  He also recognized immediately who the baby was, Jesus – the Savior of the world.  May I encourage you to join me in being grateful for the gift of salvation found in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Gratefulness helps us keep perspective in life.  Remember who this season is about, Jesus Christ, Savior of the World.  In the busyness of our business, let’s remember and rejoice in the Messiah – Jesus Christ – our Savior, the true reason for this Christmas season.

Quote of the day:  Constantly choosing to be busy may be an unconscious attempt to have value before the Lord. To deepen requires exactly the opposite! We must slow down, choosing to spend blocks of time with God in private. We need to let go of the value we place on service, availability and busyness and take up the value God places on quietness, trust and peace (rest). We need to be aware of being too needed in any work; we are not! God calls us not foremost to “accomplish,” but to a deep relationship with Himself. A deep friendship with us as persons is what He desires most. Dr. Stanford

Renewed Strength

Renewed Strength

He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks strength He increases power. Isaiah 40:29

Welcome to a new week of Freedom Fighters. I trust you had a refreshing weekend. I have been around so many people lately who have complained that they seem to lack energy, be in a funk, lost their zest for life, or are just plain run down.

This weekend I read a blog by one of my “book mentors,” Michael Hyatt, who is an author, speaker, blogger. His insights have been a big help to me personally and as a ministry leader.

This weekend he wrote a blog “44 Actions You Can Take Now to Boost Your Energy.” I am going to share the list with you and trust it will be helpful. I will share 22 today and the rest of the list tomorrow:

  1. Take vitamins.
  2. Lose weight.
  3. Organize your desk.
  4. Eat lean.
  5. Get 7-8 hours of sleep a night.
  6. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day.
  7. Take naps.
  8. Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
  9. Use a sun lamp.
  10. Exercise regularly.
  11. Stop watching or reading the news.
  12. Avoid negative people.
  13. Surround yourself with high-energy people.
  14. Walk faster.
  15. Decide to be energetic.
  16. Smile.
  17. Learn a new joke and tell it to someone.

A Prayer About the Radical Generosity of Grace

A Prayer About the Radical Generosity of Grace

As we bring another week of Freedom Fighters to a close, here is a powerful prayer by Pastor Scotty Smith about grace:

We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. (2 Cor. 8:1–5)

Heavenly Father, we come before you today challenged by this picture of radical grace. This one story alone underscores why we can never emphasize your grace too much. Grace is never to be counterbalanced with law, only multiplied with more grace. Indeed, through Jesus you continue to give us grace upon grace (John 1:16).

What an amazing story—the severely afflicted and extremely poor Christians of Macedonia became a model of radical generosity to the much wealthier believers in Corinth. And according to you, their motivation wasn’t fear and guilt; it was multiplied grace. For you love cheerful giving, not reluctant giving compelled by pressure from without (2 Cor. 9:7).

Father, only your grace is powerful enough to give us abundant joy in the absence of affluence, coupled with hearts that beg to give sacrificially beyond our means for the benefit of strangers! The law cannot produce that kind of people—not even grace plus law, but only grace upon grace.

For the glory of Jesus and the advancing of your kingdom, we ask you to give us the same grace you gave the churches of Macedonia. The needs all around us are exponential, but your resources are endless. Indeed, help us to excel in the grace of giving. For you are “able to make all grace abound to [us], so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, [we] can abound in every good work” (2 Cor. 9:8). Enrich us in every way that we might be generous in every way (2 Cor. 9:11)—with our time, talents, and treasures, and with great forbearance and extravagant forgiveness.

Jesus, you are the ultimate cheerful giver. That is what the gospel is all about. Though you were rich, you gladly became poor for us, that by your poverty we might become joyfully rich through you (2 Cor. 8:9). Make your gladness ours. Make your generosity ours. We pray in your great and gracious name. Amen.

Stand With Each Other

Standing with Each Other

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

It’s happened numerous times. Men that I have respected have crashed and burned. One of the common denominators? They tried to be lone rangers never reaching out for help or accountability.

God never intended us to be lone rangers but to stand with each other. Drs. Henry & Richard Blackaby share this truth:

From the beginning of time, God made it clear that it is not good for His people to be alone (Gen. 2:18). God designed us to cooperate. Throughout the Scriptures He speaks of His people as a community that accomplishes more together than separately.

God did not create us as isolated individuals, each seeking to achieve our own goals. Rather, the success of our endeavors depends upon our interdependence. This is why He established the church and released His Holy Spirit to empower the community of believers to spread the gospel. We are to be a kingdom of priests (1 Pet. 2:9).

During difficult times it is critical that we are walking in fellowship with other Christians. When a crisis hits, it is overwhelming to face it alone. But if we have cultivated supportive friendships, we will find strength in the comfort and encouragement of those who care about us. Interdependence is also a safeguard for us when we are lured by temptation.

The consistent testimony of those who have fallen to temptation is that they isolated themselves from other believers and were not held accountable by Christian friends. If you are not a part of a caring community of believers, you are missing out on what God designed you for. You are also in danger of falling into sin. You must link your life with others who are seeking God’s will. Seek to be a person who willingly joins others in carrying out God’s assignments. Be the source of support and encouragement that those around you need.

Seize The Day!  Carpe Diem? Wait a minute… Isn’t that somewhere in the Bible?

Not…

Oops…

Oh man do we get things backwards sometimes.  Everything in our culture tells us to reach out and grab for something.  It tells us to leverage our own time, talents and resources to go do extraordinary things… especially for G0d.

Even much of the church in America tells us we must “take up our cross and follow Jesus.”  And this is absolutely true.  It is found in the passage of Matthew chapter 10.  Verse 38 says: “If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.”  However, what is often omitted is the next verse.  It says: “If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.”

In this passage, Jesus is not talking about us living our life FOR Him.  He is talking about us abandoning our lives as we know them.  Read the passage.  He is talking to the disciples and sending them out to preach.  He is talking about abandoning everything, like financial stability, peace, safety, freedom, reputation, relationships… everything to follow Him and spread the message of the Kingdom.  But, in all of this,  He tells us not to be afraid, that He is in charge, He has everything under control. Verses 19,20 say: “When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

Wait a minute… catch that.  God does not want us to work FOR Him.  He wants to work (even speak) THROUGH us.  He doesn’t want us to seize anything.  He wants us to let go of everything, so He can do His thing.

Does that twist us?  Make us feel uncomfortable?  It just might.  We may have thought it noble to “pick up our cross” and go to work for G0d.  He might just be proud of us!  But when we realize that Christ is talking about TOTAL commitment, total abandonment to His ways, we may shrink away wondering “what’s in it for us?”

Well, it seems a bunch of folks have thought about this very question for many centuries.  One of the best answers comes from the Westminster Shorter Catechism.  The very first section of the document asks:  “What is the chief end of man?”  and answers: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.”

You see, life is all about God.  It is His Universe, His Rules, His Game, and He gets all the credit.  BUT, and this is a VERY BIG BUT:  Because of who He is, because of His unfathomable Grace – His is a very good game.  Those who have trusted in Him for it all get to enjoy all the things we’ve ever been looking for anyway (like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control for starters) – with Him – forever.

Right Thinking

Right Thinking

Today we welcome a new blogger to our Freedom Fighter team. Joe Freeman is a graduate of the Colony of Mercy and continues to grow in his walk with the Lord. For the past several months Joe has battled many physical challenges. Through it all, he has walked victoriously.

It is 6 am and I am starting another day in which the Lord will teach me more about Him and what my commitment to Jesus Christ truly means.   So many of my days have been spent figuring out how God wanted me or needed me to work for Him.  II Corinthians 6:1 states:  We then as workers together WITH Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain (emphasis mine).  Such a tiny word “with”, yet such a large one in terms of serving as a game changer.  Our Lord does not require and, most importantly, does not need me to work for Him.  He does quite well running things without the input of Joe Freeman, and He does not need my self-important views or suggestions.  My personal history shows that my Father spends more time correcting my work than needing it!

My reason for sharing this is that we as Christian workers get so frustrated in trying to make our mark in life or in pleasing God.  It is vital that we recognize, acknowledge, and then live the fact that we cannot make God love us any more or any less than He already does.  No amount of works, self-imposed or dictated by others, will influence His almighty love for us.  We need look no further than that one act on that one day in that one moment at Calvary to know beyond any doubt that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that we could spend an eternity in devoted fellowship with our loving Father (John 3:16), that we were fearfully and wonderfully made, that our inward parts were specifically and uniquely formed (You knit me together in my mother’s womb (Ps 139:13).) He loves us and we have value because He sees us as valuable.

So get out of bed and tell your Father “Good morning,”  thank Him for Jesus, and praise Him that He has given us His Holy Spirit so that we may discern where His light is. Then have the courage and enthusiasm to go and join Him in His work for His purpose.  Let’s be kids, pack a lunch, and put on our work clothes as we go celebrate and enjoy working with our Dad at His job.  Let’s stop complicating the simple process of love and begin to share it on a daily basis.

Father, I thank you for the simple things, like a hot cup of coffee, electricity, paper and pen, and Your love which is free, available, and abundant.  Thank You for blessing me with all of these things.  Teach me how to pass it on and share with others.  Amen
